Trump rejects Iran’s peace offer, trolls with Trump Strait — report says he expects bombing to resume after midterms

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Trump has reportedly rejected Iran’s new seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart nuclear negotiations.
  • Tehran offered to reopen the strait if Washington lifted its naval blockade, eased oil sanctions and agreed to other ceasefire conditions.
  • U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal that Trump remains skeptical Iran would keep its commitments and expects military strikes could resume after the November midterms.

President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected Iran’s latest attempt to strike a deal — and the next chapter could come after the midterm elections.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday night that Trump turned down Tehran’s new seven-day proposal and has told aides he expects U.S. bombing of Iran could resume after November’s elections.

The Iranian offer emerged during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and restarting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

But Tehran wanted quite a bit in return.

The United States would have to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales and agree to a ceasefire arrangement extending to fighting in Lebanon. Iran has also sought access to billions of dollars in frozen assets.

The Strait of Hormuz remains Iran’s biggest bargaining chip. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas passed through the waterway before the war, making disruptions there a major factor in global energy prices.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Friday that Tehran would honor its commitments if Washington accepted the proposal. He also said Iran would permit international nuclear inspectors into the country as part of an agreement.

Trump apparently isn’t convinced.

According to the Journal, U.S. officials say the president privately doubts Iran would meet Washington’s demands on its nuclear program even though he has publicly maintained that Tehran badly wants a deal.

Trump signaled his thinking earlier this week at the United Nations.

He said he had a “big decision to make” over whether to reach an agreement with Iran or continue military action, while predicting that a final deal might not come until after the midterm elections.

The report does not mean Trump has formally ordered a new bombing campaign.

The scale and timing of any renewed military operation remain undecided, and officials said Trump’s position could still change in the coming weeks.

But for now, Iran put a seven-day offer on the table.

Trump appears willing to wait.
