Playing with fire: Hasan Piker sparks outrage after mocking fallen Navy SEALs

Chief Special Warfare Operator Christopher Chambers fell into heavy seas while boarding a vessel; Nathan Gage Ingram jumped in to try to save him. Both men died.
The resurfaced clip comes as Piker’s rhetoric has become a political headache for Democrats who have associated with the influential left-wing streamer.

Hasan Piker has found another way to make himself the story.

The left-wing Twitch star is facing a new round of outrage after a clip circulated showing him laughing as he discussed the deaths of two Navy SEALs during a dangerous mission in the Arabian Sea.

“Yeah, like those two SEALs that tripped and fell off the f—ing ladder and drowned in the Red Sea,” Piker said.

Except the actual story of what happened to those men wasn’t nearly so glib.

Chief Special Warfare Operator Christopher J. Chambers and Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Nathan Gage Ingram were conducting a nighttime boarding operation in January 2024 against a vessel illegally transporting advanced weapons from Iran to Houthi forces in Yemen.

Chambers lost his grip while attempting to board the vessel and fell into heavy seas. Ingram jumped into the water to try to save his teammate. Both men, weighed down by their equipment, drowned and were lost at sea.

Ingram was later posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his attempt to save Chambers.

The Navy subsequently honored both SEALs at a memorial ceremony in Coronado, California, where their teammates pressed their Tridents into a wooden plaque bearing the fallen operators’ names.

That history made Piker’s laughing description particularly combustible.

Former CBS and Fox correspondent Adam Housley, who said he had watched SEALs conduct similar ship-boardings in the Red Sea, blasted the remarks and described climbing the ladders involved as “tedious and tough.” Other critics quickly piled on as the clip spread across X.

The timing isn’t especially convenient for Piker’s political friends, either.

Piker has recently become a national political story after campaigning during the Democratic primary with Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. El-Sayed has since distanced himself from some of Piker’s rhetoric, including Piker’s assertion this month that the United States has committed more terrorism than al-Qaeda “pound for pound.”

And criticism of Piker’s comments about American servicemen isn’t new. Rep. Ritchie Torres previously called attention to Piker’s remarks praising the insurgent who wounded former Navy SEAL Dan Crenshaw.

Now Piker’s own words about Chambers and Ingram are making the rounds. The Navy’s description of the two men is considerably different.

“Chris and Gage embodied the virtue of love,” one speaker said at their memorial. Their legacy, the speaker added, remains a source of “inspiration, motivation, and growth” for the Naval Special Warfare community.
