The Democratic Party is rolling out a new strategy for winning some of the country’s toughest congressional races this fall: keeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez several hundred miles away from them.
The move follows an Axios report that Democrats in some competitive races have explicitly asked AOC’s team not to campaign in their districts, while others who happily embraced the New York congresswoman during primary season are suddenly discovering scheduling conflicts.
“The polling is atrocious for her,” one senior Democratic strategist told Axios. “She’s a lightning rod.”
That apparently prompted party officials to formalize what had previously been an informal arrangement.
Under the new Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee program, competitive districts will be divided into three categories:
Safe AOC — districts where she may appear in person.
AOC Caution — districts where endorsements are permitted but photographs should be taken from a considerable distance.
And AOC Red Zones — districts where the congresswoman may not campaign, endorse anyone, tag the candidate on social media or accidentally be photographed buying coffee within 50 miles.
Candidates will receive an emergency text alert whenever Ocasio-Cortez crosses into their state.
The system is already showing promise.
Montana Democrat Sam Forstag rallied with AOC while seeking his party’s nomination in May. Now that he’s running in the general election, Axios reports that her endorsement has disappeared from his campaign website.
Officials stressed that the disappearance was completely routine.
“Endorsements naturally migrate south during the general election,” one Democratic operative explained.
Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed also featured Ocasio-Cortez heavily during his primary campaign. Since winning the nomination, however, Axios reports that he has spent almost nothing on television advertising featuring her.
His campaign says AOC remains welcome.
Preferably sometime after November 3.
Republicans have reportedly responded to the Democratic strategy by offering to pay for her airfare.
