Trump teases ‘some big surprises’ coming just weeks before midterms

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Trump teased “some big surprises” coming within weeks while singling out White House budget director Russ Vought during a Tuesday appearance in Sparrows Point, Maryland.
  • “He’s got some great things happening,” Trump said, without revealing what Vought is working on.
  • The tease comes less than a month before the Nov. 3 midterms — and just days after Trump separately predicted Republicans are going to deliver a “big surprise” on Election Day.

Donald Trump is keeping everyone guessing with Election Day less than four weeks away.

Speaking Tuesday in Sparrows Point, Maryland, Trump was recognizing members of his administration when he got to Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought — and suddenly dropped a tantalizing tease.

“Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought, who is fantastic,” Trump began.

Then came the whammy.

“We have some big surprises coming up in another few weeks, right, Russ?” Trump said. “He’s gonna be one of the very important people in the history of our country, in my opinion. He’s got some great things happening.”

And that was basically it.

Trump didn’t explain the surprises, say precisely when they would be revealed or spell out what Vought has cooking.

But the timing certainly guarantees attention.

The midterm elections are Nov. 3, and Trump has been barnstorming the country trying to fire up Republican voters. The Maryland tease also came just days after the president used remarkably similar language during his Saturday rally in Vandalia, Ohio.

“I think we’re gonna have a big surprise because they don’t know what’s happening,” Trump told the Ohio crowd.

He later doubled down: “They’re in for a big surprise. They’re in for a big surprise. You just gotta, very simple, you gotta get out and vote.”

That Ohio comment appeared to be about Trump’s confidence in Republican turnout and the election result. Tuesday’s remark was different: Trump explicitly connected the coming “big surprises” to Vought and whatever the budget director has underway.

Vought is hardly an obscure figure inside the administration. He heads the powerful Office of Management and Budget and has played a major role in Trump’s efforts to reshape federal spending and the executive branch.

Trump’s mysterious promise immediately generated speculation about what Vought might be preparing, including claims from critics that it could somehow involve the election. But Trump himself didn’t say that, and no evidence has surfaced establishing what the “big surprises” actually are.

So for now, that’s the story: Trump says something big is coming, Russ Vought apparently knows what it is, and the rest of America gets to wait.

MY QUICK TAKE:

Oh, Donald.

You don’t tell Washington, the media and the entire political class that you’ve got “some big surprises” coming in a few weeks — with the midterms staring everybody in the face — and then just move along to the next name.

That’s how you guarantee three weeks of cable-news panels trying to guess what’s inside the box.

Whatever Vought has cooking, Trump certainly knows how to make sure everyone is watching when the lid finally comes off.
