BS BULLETIN:
- New York City’s Health Department is moving ahead with roughly $8.9 million in contracts for organizations providing gender-affirming care to patients under 18.
- The city’s procurement notice specifically includes puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy when deemed medically necessary under prevailing standards of care.
- The move comes as major New York hospital systems have stopped providing such treatments to minors amid federal investigations and settlements.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration is putting nearly $9 million behind gender-affirming medical care for minors as the Trump administration pressures hospitals to stop providing those treatments.
The city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said it intends to enter agreements totaling approximately $8.9 million with providers including Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and the Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives.
And the city’s own description is unusually specific about what taxpayers would be funding.
“This includes the prescription and administration of puberty-blockers and hormone replacement therapy to all minor patients for whom such services are medically necessary based on the prevailing standards of care,” the Health Department said.
The department added that the services would be performed by New York-licensed medical providers and must comply with state laws governing parental consent.
The proposed contracts are scheduled to begin Feb. 1, 2027, run through June 2029 and include an option for another three-year renewal. Other eligible providers have until Oct. 16 to express interest.
The $8.9 million procurement is part of a broader $15 million gender-affirming-care initiative announced by the Mamdani administration this summer.
The timing is notable.
NYU Langone and Mount Sinai are among the major health systems that have agreed to stop providing gender-related medical interventions to minors after federal investigations. The Justice Department announced last month that NYU would pay $8.5 million as part of its agreement, while Mount Sinai separately agreed to stop providing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to minors and dedicate $2 million toward care for people reporting harmful consequences from treatments received as children.
The Justice Department characterizes these interventions as dangerous and potentially unlawful. Medical organizations and advocates supporting gender-affirming care dispute that characterization and argue that access to such treatment should remain available under appropriate medical standards.
Mamdani has previously criticized hospitals for ending the programs, saying those decisions “politicize families’ most private medical decisions, vilify lifesaving care, and undermine professional medical judgment.”
Now his administration is putting city money behind keeping that care available.
MY QUICK TAKE:
There’s quite a contrast here.
The Trump Justice Department is cutting deals with some of New York’s biggest hospitals to get them out of the pediatric gender-care business.
New York City responds by reaching for the municipal checkbook.
And we’re not talking about an ambiguous “youth wellness” program buried somewhere in the fine print. The city’s own notice explicitly says puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy for minors.
Nearly $9 million.
New Yorkers can decide for themselves whether that’s where they want their city government drawing the line — and writing the checks.
