Trump makes John Fetterman an offer that could give Senate Democrats nightmares

  • Trump publicly invited Democratic Sen. John Fetterman to join the Republican Party.
  • The president praised Fetterman’s judgment and suggested he could have difficulty winning another Democratic nomination.
  • Fetterman has repeatedly rejected switching parties, despite breaking with Democrats on several major issues.

President Donald Trump isn’t merely complimenting Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman anymore. He’s openly inviting him to become a Republican — and suggesting that remaining a Democrat could make his political future considerably more difficult.

Speaking with reporters Saturday at Joint Base Andrews after returning from a rally in Tennessee, Trump was asked whether he had discussed a possible party switch with Fetterman.

“I’d love to see it. I think he’s great,” Trump replied.

The president then offered a political warning, saying it could be difficult for Fetterman to secure another Democratic nomination.

Trump also praised Fetterman as a “great guy” and spoke warmly about the senator’s parents, whom he said he had met.

“He’s a very solid person,” Trump said.

The president’s comments reflect an increasingly unusual political relationship. Fetterman, elected as a Democrat in 2022, has repeatedly broken with his party on issues including immigration enforcement and Israel.

His willingness to criticize progressive Democrats has earned him praise from some Republicans, although he continues to vote with Democrats on most issues.

Trump believes Fetterman’s appeal may now be stronger among Republicans than among members of his own party.

The president pointed to polling as evidence of that argument, although he did not identify a particular survey during the remarks reported.

Fetterman, however, has consistently rejected speculation that he intends to become a Republican.

In a Washington Post essay published in May, he described himself as a “terrible Republican who still votes overwhelmingly with Democrats.”

He was even more emphatic in September when asked again about the possibility of switching parties.

“I’m not going to be a Republican,” Fetterman said.

That hasn’t stopped the Pennsylvania senator from cooperating publicly with Republicans.

Last month, Fetterman recorded a video for a Republican midterm convention praising fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick.

In the video, he emphasized his opposition to political extremism and socialism while reaffirming his commitment to the country.

The appearance attracted attention because Fetterman was participating in an event organized by the opposing party during a closely contested midterm election season.

Trump’s latest remarks come as Republicans and Democrats prepare for November’s elections, when control of the Senate will be at stake.

A party switch by Fetterman could have significant implications for the balance of power in Washington.

But despite Trump’s public invitation, Fetterman has given no indication that he intends to leave the Democratic Party.

For now, the president appears content to keep extending the invitation — and reminding Democrats that one of their own senators has become a frequent source of praise from the other side.
