New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani intensified his criticism of federal immigration enforcement Sunday, suggesting that an armed ICE officer involved in a recent shooting could have been mistaken for a mass shooter.
The remarks came during an MS NOW interview following Thursday’s shooting of a Dominican immigrant during an attempted immigration arrest in the Marble Hill neighborhood.
The encounter involved Oscar Belgal, 28, who was inside a vehicle with his five-year-old son when federal officers attempted to take him into custody.
An ICE officer fired at the vehicle, striking Belgal in the neck.
The Department of Homeland Security maintains that Belgal ignored instructions, accelerated into government vehicles and drove toward officers, creating an immediate threat.
The mayor has challenged the agency’s account and criticized the appearance and tactics of the officers involved.
In his Sunday interview, Mamdani described agents wearing construction vests and carrying long guns, arguing that members of the public could have difficulty identifying them as law enforcement officers.
He then suggested the scene resembled the appearance of a mass shooter rather than a recognizable federal law enforcement operation.
Mamdani also reiterated his demand that ICE cease operations in New York City.
The mayor has gone further than criticizing this particular encounter, expressing opposition to the agency’s continued operations in the city.
The shooting has prompted protests and an investigation by Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
The New York Police Department was not involved in the shooting itself, although its handling of subsequent demonstrations has also drawn criticism.
The controversy highlights the increasingly confrontational relationship between New York City officials and federal immigration authorities.
Federal officials contend that agents were responding to a dangerous attempt to evade arrest.
Mamdani argues that the tactics employed by ICE endangered residents and undermined public confidence in law enforcement.
Those competing accounts remain central to the investigation.
What is beyond dispute is that the mayor has chosen unusually provocative language to describe the federal officers, turning a disputed use-of-force incident into a broader political confrontation over immigration enforcement in America’s largest city.
MY QUICK TAKE
Apparently, in New York City, the mayor has decided that the most suspicious thing about an armed federal officer is that he might actually be enforcing federal law. The welcome wagon has definitely left the building.
