THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).
- Nicaragua’s government rejected Natasha Franceschi, Washington’s choice for ambassador, creating a fresh diplomatic confrontation.
- Acting U.S. envoy Elias Baumann returned to Washington for consultations following the rejection, at Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s direction.
- The State Department accused Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo of diplomatic hypocrisy and “political theater at the expense of the Nicaraguan people.”
LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).
Nicaragua’s authoritarian government has rejected President Donald Trump’s choice for U.S. ambassador, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has responded by bringing America’s top diplomat in Managua back to Washington.
The dispute centers on Natasha Franceschi, a career diplomat selected to serve as ambassador to Nicaragua.
Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, who jointly lead Nicaragua’s government, refused to accept her appointment.
On Tuesday, the State Department announced that acting U.S. envoy Elias Baumann had returned to Washington for critical consultations.
The move came at Rubio’s direction.
And the administration made clear it wasn’t treating Nicaragua’s decision as an ordinary diplomatic disagreement.
The State Department accused Ortega and Murillo of hypocrisy and staging political theater at the expense of the Nicaraguan people.
It also described Franceschi as a highly qualified career diplomat whose rejection demonstrated the government’s unwillingness to pursue productive dialogue.
The confrontation comes after years of deteriorating relations between Washington and Managua.
Ortega has accused the United States of interfering in Nicaragua’s internal affairs through regional organizations and diplomatic pressure.
Washington, meanwhile, has criticized the government’s suppression of political opposition, restrictions on civil liberties and concentration of power.
The dispute comes as Nicaragua faces international scrutiny over its political system and its government’s announcement that the country will no longer hold elections.
The United States has also expressed concern about Nicaragua’s security relationships with countries outside the Western Hemisphere.
American officials previously alleged that security personnel from an unidentified country outside the region were training Nicaraguan police and sharing intelligence.
Nicaragua has security cooperation agreements with Russia and China, although Washington’s allegation did not publicly identify which country was involved.
The ambassador dispute adds another obstacle to diplomatic engagement. The United States has not had a full ambassador serving in Managua since 2023. Franceschi’s appointment was intended to restore that level of representation. Instead, Nicaragua refused to receive her.
Recalling Baumann for consultations is a diplomatic protest, not a formal severing of relations.
Washington has not announced that it is closing its embassy or ending diplomatic ties. But the message from Rubio’s State Department is clear enough. If Ortega and Murillo want to reject an American ambassador, they can expect Washington to respond rather than pretend the snub never happened.
