Florida Dem candidate tells CNN she wants Republican rival Ashley Moody locked up

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon told CNN she wants Republican Sen. Ashley Moody jailed over a disputed $10 million settlement.
  • When CNN’s Kasie Hunt asked if she really wanted her political opponent locked up, Nixon replied, “Yeah, basically, yes.”
  • Moody has not been charged, the grand jury issued no indictment, and a Florida appeals court ordered its report expunged.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

Florida Democrat Angie Nixon apparently has a solution for dealing with her Republican Senate opponent: Put her in prison.

And this wasn’t some overheated campaign remark caught on a hidden microphone. Nixon delivered it Wednesday on CNN, with Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy appearing alongside her, then confirmed it when host Kasie Hunt gave her an opportunity to clarify.

Nixon, the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, accused her opponent of wrongdoing involving a $10 million Medicaid-related settlement connected to Florida’s Hope Florida Foundation.

She called Moody a “lying, cheating, thieving, scamming person” and accused her of redirecting money intended for sick children into political organizations supporting Gov. Ron DeSantis’ agenda.

Then came the remarkable explanation for why Nixon rejected Republican campaign advertisements suggesting she wanted to abolish prisons.

“Why would I want to do that when I want her locked up and punished in jail for what she has done?” Nixon asked.

Hunt immediately sought clarification.

“You want your Republican opponent locked up?”

Nixon didn’t back away.

“Yeah, basically, yes, because of what she did, yes. I absolutely would want that to happen, yes.”

Hunt followed up by asking whether Nixon had sufficient evidence to justify such punishment.

Rather than presenting a criminal charge or conviction, Nixon pointed to the investigation surrounding the Hope Florida settlement and accused Florida’s political establishment of corruption.

There’s a significant complication with that argument.

A Florida grand jury investigated the settlement, which involved a $10 million payment to the Hope Florida Foundation from a larger settlement with Centene Corporation. The foundation subsequently awarded grants to two organizations whose funds flowed into political activity opposing a marijuana legalization amendment.

But the grand jury returned no indictment. And on October 7, Florida’s First District Court of Appeal ordered its report expunged, finding that it exceeded permissible boundaries by accusing individuals and organizations of wrongdoing without bringing charges.

Moody has denied wrongdoing. Her office has maintained that the settlement was negotiated by Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration and that the attorney general’s office did not know how the foundation would subsequently spend the money.

None of that prevented Nixon from demanding an investigation and expressing her desire to see her opponent imprisoned.

The exchange quickly attracted attention on X, where users shared the CNN clip and questioned the candidate’s enthusiasm for jailing a political rival.

“What’s the crime? Having the audacity to run against her?” asked one commenter highlighted by Twitchy.

Another pointed to Murphy’s presence during the interview: “Mind you, there is a sitting US senator smiling like a good little boy next to her as she said it.”

And one observer offered the blunt assessment: “That’s not a Senate campaign, that’s a revenge tour.”

Murphy had just praised Nixon as an “exceptional candidate” and disclosed that he had committed $100,000 to her campaign and other Florida races.

Before the interview ended, Nixon offered another interesting promise: She would represent Republicans and MAGA Republicans, too, if elected.

That’s reassuring.

Just don’t forget to ask whether the visiting hours are included.
