THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).
- The Chicks’ Natalie Maines revived her infamous 2003 George W. Bush controversy during a New York concert, saying she’d now give Bush a kiss compared with Trump.
- The White House fired back Wednesday by calling Maines a “despicable nobody” with a “peanut-sized brain” — repeating an insult it first delivered in May.
- Concertgoers and social media commenters split over her latest political remarks, with some praising her outspokenness and others asking entertainers to stick to the music.
LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).
Natalie Maines of The Chicks has spent more than two decades reminding America that she doesn’t particularly care for Republican presidents.
But now Donald Trump has apparently accomplished the impossible.
He’s made her nostalgic for George W. Bush.
During The Chicks’ 20th-anniversary celebration of their album “Taking the Long Way” in Manhattan this week, Maines revisited the 2003 controversy that nearly derailed the group’s country-music career.
Back then, Maines publicly criticized Bush just before the Iraq War, telling a London audience that the group was ashamed the president came from Texas.
The resulting uproar included radio boycotts, protests and angry fans destroying the band’s CDs.
At Monday’s concert, Maines revisited that moment and compared it with her feelings about Trump.
“We thought that was the worst it could get,” she said.
Then came her surprising reassessment of the former president.
“Now I’d give George (W.) Bush a big wet kiss,” Maines joked.
Her explanation? She’s now embarrassed that Trump is president of the United States.
That’s quite a journey. From being ashamed that Bush came from Texas to wanting to plant one on him because of Trump.
And the White House wasn’t particularly impressed.
Responding to Fox News Digital on Wednesday, a White House spokesperson called Maines a “despicable nobody” and accused her of suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome.
The statement also mocked what the spokesperson called her “peanut-sized brain.”
That wasn’t even a fresh insult. The White House delivered the same statement in May after Maines unleashed a profanity-filled Instagram attack against Trump, accusing him of undermining democracy and misusing taxpayer money.
She described the president using a vulgar two-word insult and encouraged followers to circulate her post after an earlier version was removed.
At the time, Maines defended herself, declaring, “This nobody American stands by her post.”
Fast-forward to October, and apparently neither side has developed a particularly new opinion of the other.
Maines still doesn’t like Trump. The White House still doesn’t like Maines. And the same three-word insult has returned for an encore.
Not everyone attending The Chicks’ anniversary concerts appreciated the political commentary.
One Instagram commenter responding to the controversy complained, “Kind of tired of this political rant… get on with your music which I love.”
Another said the experience was particularly frustrating after spending heavily on concert tickets.
“Spent $1500 for a ticket to see a concert with wonderful music. Did not want to hear politics,” the commenter wrote.
Other fans defended Maines, praising her willingness to speak publicly about her political beliefs regardless of the consequences.
That willingness has been central to The Chicks’ public identity since the Bush controversy.
The group, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, dropped “Dixie” from its name in 2020 and has remained outspoken about political and cultural issues.
The current anniversary tour celebrates “Taking the Long Way,” the 2006 album that followed the backlash over Maines’ Iraq War remarks. It included the song “Not Ready to Make Nice,” which became an anthem of defiance for the band and its supporters.
Twenty years later, Maines appears no more inclined to make nice with Republican presidents.
