‘Get some wrinkle cream!’ NewsNation guest erupts as French riots debate turns personal

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • A NewsNation debate over riots in France exploded into a shouting match between conservative radio host Ben Ferguson and commentator Lisa Durden.
  • Ferguson challenged Durden’s claim that the unrest was driven by students, accusing her of pushing a false narrative about the rioters.
  • Durden responded with personal insults, telling Ferguson he looked wrinkled and should buy some wrinkle cream.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

France has riots in the streets, protesters clashing with police, and enough political turmoil to keep Emmanuel Macron reaching for the aspirin.

But on NewsNation, the emergency apparently involved Ben Ferguson’s skincare routine.

Monday night’s edition of Katie Pavlich Tonight featured Ferguson and commentator Lisa Durden discussing the violent unrest in France. What began as a disagreement over the identity of the rioters quickly deteriorated into the sort of television spectacle that makes Jerry Springer look like a faculty seminar.

Durden insisted the demonstrations began as peaceful student protests before outside agitators arrived.

“The protests in France are students,” she declared. “This protest began very, very peaceful until sadly, agitators jumped in and began the violence.”

Ferguson wasn’t buying what she was selling.

“You either have to be incredibly incompetent or totally blind to look at the images and think that this is students that are doing this,” he fired back.

He pointed to photographs of rioters who, in his view, appeared considerably older than the average high school student.

“They look like they’re my age. I’m 45. They’re people that are 30. They’re not 17.”

Now, identifying someone’s age from riot footage isn’t exactly a forensic science. But Ferguson had a larger point to make: He argued that organized activist groups, not simply angry students, were helping drive the violence.

He cited reporting identifying dozens of organizations associated with the demonstrations, including revolutionary socialist groups and Palestinian-solidarity movements.

Then Ferguson accused Durden of promoting a false narrative and invoked the phrase “pathological liar.”

And just like that, the French riots were no longer the main attraction.

When host Katie Pavlich gave Durden an opportunity to respond, she came charging out of the gate.

“What you’re not going to do is call me a pathological liar!” she shouted, pointing toward the camera.

“You don’t know me from a can of paint.”

Ferguson tried to drag the conversation back toward the evidence.

“Look at the data!”

Good luck with that.

“No, I’m talking now. You’re not going to call me a pathological liar, because you don’t know me,” Durden continued. “So stop that right now!”

Ferguson then introduced an unrelated accusation about Durden participating in meetings that excluded white people, adding another argument to a discussion that was already suffering from a severe shortage of adult supervision.

Durden accused him of interrupting her.

“Excuse you! You’re cutting me off. You’re very disrespectful.”

And then, with French politics apparently exhausted as a subject, she turned to Ferguson’s face.

“You are not looking at anybody’s ID to know who’s 45. YOU look 45, though! You got some wrinkles. Get some wrinkle cream!”

She repeated the assessment for anyone who might have missed the dermatological diagnosis.

“You look wrinkled!”

There it was. A debate about political violence in France had somehow produced a televised recommendation for anti-aging products.

Ferguson attempted one final return to the original dispute.

“They’re not 16!” he protested.

By this point, however, the argument had wandered so far from France that it probably needed a passport to get back.

Pavlich eventually moved the discussion along, leaving viewers with plenty of shouting but precious little resolution about who was actually behind the unrest.
