THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • Opa-locka police arrested Demetris Jones, 34, after a confrontation at an apartment complex Wednesday night.
  • Officers say Jones wore a security uniform, carried a tactical rifle and refused repeated commands to disarm.
  • Authorities say Jones lacked an active armed-security license and now faces four criminal charges.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

It’s one thing to dress like a security guard and carry a tactical rifle.

It’s another thing entirely to allegedly threaten police officers while doing it — especially when the officers discover you don’t have the required armed-security license.

That was the situation Wednesday night in Opa-locka, Florida, where police arrested 34-year-old Demetris Jones following a tense confrontation outside an apartment complex.

According to an arrest report reviewed by Local 10 News, officers encountered Jones around 9:50 p.m. near Northwest 22nd Avenue and 139th Street. He was reportedly wearing a security guard’s uniform with an American tactical rifle slung around his neck.

Police said the encounter quickly turned confrontational.

According to the report, Jones began “verbally and physically challenging” officers and assumed an aggressive fighting stance.

Officers ordered him repeatedly to remove his firearm. Instead, investigators allege, Jones refused to disarm and continued making threats toward law enforcement officers.

That is not generally the sort of interaction that ends with a friendly warning.

Police say they eventually managed to safely retrieve the rifle and take Jones into custody shortly after 10:20 p.m. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Thursday morning.

Then came the licensing issue.

According to the police report, Jones did not possess an active armed-security license.

Authorities listed four charges: aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, knowingly and willfully threatening a law enforcement officer with death or serious bodily harm, engaging in security services without a license, and carrying a firearm while on duty as a security officer.

The whole point of security is generally to make a situation safer. Somebody apparently missed that chapter of the training manual.
