Florida teacher reassigned after bringing dead cat to elementary school

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).

  • Duval County Public Schools confirmed that an employee brought a dead cat onto the campus of Sabal Palm Elementary School in Jacksonville.
  • The district reassigned the teacher pending an investigation and had the affected classroom thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Officials say no students came into contact with the animal or were aware of its presence.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).

There are some things teachers bring to school that don’t require much explanation.

Books. Lesson plans. Pencils. Maybe a classroom pet. A dead cat, however, generally calls for a meeting with the principal.

That’s precisely the unusual situation facing officials at Sabal Palm Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida, where a teacher has been reassigned after school authorities confirmed that a deceased cat had been brought onto campus.

Duval County Public Schools acknowledged the incident Thursday, saying it was investigating how and why the animal ended up at the elementary school.

The district said it confirmed the report Wednesday and worked with school administrators to notify affected families. Principal Amber Felts informed parents that students and staff had been safely relocated before the situation was discovered.

According to school officials, no children came into contact with the animal, and none were aware it was there.

That is certainly the good news.

The less reassuring development is that the district’s maintenance crew had to thoroughly clean, sanitize, and disinfect the affected classroom as a precaution. The teacher involved has been reassigned while the investigation continues.

School officials haven’t publicly explained the circumstances surrounding the animal, including why it was brought to school in the first place. They also haven’t described any disciplinary findings or announced a conclusion to the investigation.

And without that explanation, parents are understandably left with one fairly basic question: Why?

There are perfectly normal occasions when animal specimens are used for educational demonstrations. But nothing released by the district establishes that this was such an occasion.

Whatever the explanation turns out to be, school officials clearly considered the incident serious enough to remove the employee from the classroom pending review. For now, Sabal Palm Elementary has a freshly disinfected classroom, a reassigned teacher, and one of the stranger unanswered questions in Florida education.
