  • His office says he is awake, alert and responding well to treatment.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time)

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is recovering after suffering a stroke Saturday afternoon while watching his son’s hockey game.

Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors diagnosed the stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for additional monitoring.

His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, released an encouraging statement Sunday:

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

The health emergency comes just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections. Murphy has been traveling around the country campaigning for Democratic candidates and was scheduled to appear in New Hampshire on Sunday.

President Trump said he was surprised by the news and planned to contact Murphy at an appropriate time.

Sen. John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his own 2022 Senate campaign, joined lawmakers from both parties in wishing Murphy a speedy recovery.

Murphy’s office has not disclosed the severity of the stroke or a possible hospital discharge date.
