THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do).
- Elon Musk’s America PAC has reportedly committed roughly $600,000 to support Rep. Mike Lawler.
- Lawler is defending New York’s 17th District against Democrat Cait Conley.
- The spending is by an outside political committee, not a direct donation to Lawler’s campaign.
LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time).
Mike Lawler’s lighthearted street-fair dance-off with Cait Conley was cute. The next act involves Elon Musk and a great deal of money.
The New York Post reported Thursday that Musk’s America PAC is spending about $600,000 to boost Republican Rep. Mike Lawler’s reelection campaign in New York’s fiercely contested 17th Congressional District. The political operation could spend more as November 3 approaches.
Lawler faces Democrat Cait Conley in an area including portions of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties. With control of the House potentially coming down to a handful of districts, national donors have plenty of reason to pay attention to suburban New York.
Conley’s campaign has criticized Musk’s intervention, linking the billionaire’s business interests to policy debates such as artificial intelligence and data centers. Lawler’s side has noted that its opponent also benefits from significant outside spending by Democratic-aligned organizations.
The campaign-finance distinction matters: America PAC’s expenditures are independent spending, not a $600,000 direct contribution to Lawler. Federal law prohibits coordination between independent-expenditure operations and the campaigns they support.
Musk was involved in backing Lawler during the 2024 election, so the latest spending isn’t a brand-new political friendship. But the amount and timing make it a fresh development in a contest that had recently drawn attention for a very different reason.
The Daily BS already covered the candidates dancing at a Suffern street fair. That clip offered voters a rare dose of campaign civility. Now the money is arriving, and suddenly the soundtrack sounds more like cash registers than live music.
