‘I really need my mommy’: Savannah Guthrie’s heartbreaking plea nine months after mother’s disappearance

THE DAILY BS: HOW MUCH CAN YOU HANDLE?

SPARE ME THE BS (I’ve got things to do)

  • Savannah Guthrie shared her daughter’s old drawing with a devastating message: “I really need my mommy.”
  • Nine months after Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Arizona home, investigators have made no arrests.
  • Detectives recently traveled to Florida to explore new DNA testing possibilities. A $1 million family reward remains available.

LAY IT ON ME (I’ve got time)

Sometimes a child’s drawing says more than a thousand television interviews ever could.

Nine months after her 84-year-old mother was apparently kidnapped from her Arizona home, NBC’s Savannah Guthrie found an old picture drawn by her daughter, Vale.

It showed a blue umbrella in the rain, with a simple message:

“I know it might not seem like it but I really need my mommy.”

On Sunday, November 1, Guthrie shared the drawing on Instagram, marking nine agonizing months since her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared.

“Found this old drawing from my daughter today,” Savannah wrote. “It says so much about how I feel.”

The television host, who has returned to her duties on NBC’s Today show, described the painful disconnect between the life the public sees and the nightmare her family continues to endure.

“The world goes on, things appear ‘normal’ — as we try to keep going and be strong, especially for our young kids — but it’s not and it never will be.”

She continued with an appeal on behalf of her entire family, saying they ache for Nancy, desperately need answers and cannot move forward.

“Our mom was a light in this world. We want to celebrate her and give her the dignity she deserves. The reward is still available. Please. We are begging you. Please help us.”

She closed by thanking supporters for their kindness and asking them to continue praying.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson on January 31, shortly before 10 p.m. She was reported missing the following day after failing to attend a virtual church service.

Investigators believe she was abducted.

The FBI subsequently released surveillance footage showing a masked, armed individual outside Nancy’s front door, apparently tampering with her doorbell camera.

The individual has never been publicly identified.

No suspect has been named, and no arrests have been announced.

But investigators disclosed a potentially important development just two days before Savannah’s latest appeal.

On Friday, October 30, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department reported that investigators had traveled to Florida earlier in the month to consult with laboratory scientists about advancing DNA analysis in the case.

The department said several ideas had been discussed and that investigators were continuing to work with their partners.

The sheriff’s office also emphasized that even seemingly insignificant information could help.

That announcement followed months of investigative leads, surveillance analysis and disturbing ransom communications.

In July, authorities released the contents of two ransom notes that had been sent to a Tucson television station shortly after Nancy disappeared.

The first, dated February 2, demanded $4 million in Bitcoin and claimed Nancy was alive.

The second, sent February 6, claimed she had died shortly after her abduction and had been buried outdoors.

Investigators have not publicly established the truth of those claims.

The notes contained distinctive language and writing patterns that authorities hoped someone might recognize.

A separate possible ransom message reported in September was later deemed not credible.

The family’s reward of up to $1 million remains available for information leading to Nancy’s recovery.

Savannah has continued appearing on television while privately struggling with the uncertainty.

In June, she addressed viewers who might wonder how she could keep working while her mother remained missing.

“I know maybe people wonder, ‘What’s going on? How is she able to do that job? Is she not thinking about it? Did she forget?’ No. Never,” she said.

She described crying every morning on her way to work and again on her way home.

The family’s appeals have grown increasingly desperate as the months have passed.

In August, Savannah and her siblings released another statement describing the devastation of not knowing what happened to their mother.

Now, nine months after Nancy vanished, a child’s old drawing has given Savannah a way to express what she has been carrying through every broadcast, every family gathering and every day without answers.

Behind the familiar television smile is a daughter who still needs her mother.

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance can contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit an anonymous tip through the Pima County-area 88-CRIME line at 520-882-7463.
