Corporate news networks have embarked upon a new messaging campaign to paint the Trump-Vance ticket as “weird,” with two networks using the term over 160 times each on Monday alone.

The word gained coinage among Democrats and media outlets, notably CNN and MSNBC, becoming a common attack after President Joe Biden announced the end of his reelection bid and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Time magazine reported. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota is credited with starting the trend on a July 23 appearance on “Morning Joe,” according to multiple reports.

Since former President Donald Trump selected Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate on July 15 during the first day of the Republican National Convention, interviews and speeches Vance gave prior to winning his Senate campaign resurfaced, including moments where he questioned prominent Democrats who didn’t have children, including Harris, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. Vance was labeled “weird” over the resurfaced comments, while Trump’s references to cinematic villain Hannibal Lector and sharks during rallies have been used by Democrats to justify labeling the former President as “weird.”

MSNBC used the word 179 times in relation to Trump or Vance in segments, whether in panel discussions, aired video clips or from a direct comment by a host or guest on the network, the Daily Caller News Foundation found. The Monday episode of “Inside with Jen Psaki,” hosted by the former Biden administration White House press secretary, used the word 35 times in relation to Trump or Vance.

“Morning Joe” used the word 32 times in relation to Trump or Vance, per the DCNF’s search. “Morning Joe” viewers saw Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan direct the term “weird” at Trump and Vance as well on Monday.

“You know, I think that my colleagues are pointing out the obvious,” Whitmer told MSNBC host Jonathan Lemire. “That the agenda, the way they talk to people, the way they address people, it is bizarre. It’s weird. It is weird.”

While MSNBC used the word almost seven and a half times per hour, CNN was not far behind, using the term 170 times Monday in segments related to Trump or Vance, a DCNF review found. Viewers on the network saw Democratic Reps. Eric Swalwell and Barbara Lee of California both direct the term at Trump and Vance.

“I don’t think Kamala Harris is going to pick anyone as weird and creepy as J.D. Vance,” Swalwell said on “CNN This Morning” Monday.

“To have someone such as a J.D. Vance on this ticket demonstrates who Donald Trump is,” Lee said on “CNN News Central” Monday. “If you ask me, it demonstrates or shows us exactly what he believes in by selecting J.D. Vance, who is quite, as the campaign said, weird but also, pretty, pretty unprepared, very scary in many respects.”

Grabien News founder Tom Elliot said the two networks described Trump or Vance as weird over 150 times Saturday and Sunday in a Monday morning post on X.

“Usually the host will ask a Democrat, ‘Many Democrats are saying JD Vance is just plain weird, what do you think … is he really a huge weirdo?’ And then the guest will inevitably agree Vance is a weirdo,” Elliot told the DCNF. “There’s a facade of journalism, but the point is to set up the segment so there are lots of ‘JD Vance is weird’ comments that stick in the viewers’ brains.”

CNN, MSNBC and the Trump-Vance campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the DCNF.
