Radio host James Golden defended an “unfiltered” former President Donald Trump amid his attacks on fellow Republicans but suggested there should be a focus on policy in the 2024 race to November.
The host of “Bo Snerdley’s Rush Hour” dismissed criticisms of Trump after his latest attack on Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp during a rally over the weekend, telling NewsNation that Republicans shouldn’t be so “squeamish” over the former president’s methods.
“I grow concerned when I see all this infighting amongst political leaders,” NewsNation host Nick Smith said on “Morning in America” as he pointed to the “bitterness” between Trump and Kemp that goes beyond the 2020 election, asking Golden if the GOP nominee should have targeted the governor “who has proven that he can really turn out the vote” in the Peach State.
“Donald Trump is going to be Donald Trump,” replied Golden, longtime producer for Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.
“The establishment Republicans get squeamish,” he added. “They can never abide the unfiltered Donald Trump speaking his mind. Donald Trump’s base loves that he’s upfront, he’s not pretending to be somebody else and he’s not playing by the old political rules.”
Golden noted that the former president has to be more concerned with his supporters than about “individual politicians getting their feelings hurt.”
Smith wondered if there shouldn’t be a more “solid line of attack” on Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris “and what seems to be a meteoric rise.”
“The fundamentals of the election haven’t really changed,” Golden noted, adding that it “appears” that the Democrat Party is unified but there is still time before the election for protests and the fracturing of the unity to surface.
“No question, this has to turn to issues,” Golden, who is on the air six days a week on 77WABC, said, calling for a focus on Harris’s legislative failures in office.
“But I’m not worried about these little infighting stories that come up. They’ve been part of what Donald Trump is about and has been about since he first stepped into the political scene,” Golden continued.
On whether Trump’s strategy of attacking his detractors will hurt or help him in November, Golden noted that Trump supporters are “as enthusiastic as ever and they feel aggrieved by what happened in Georgia in 2020.”
He concluded that the “ground game” has to be solid for the Trump campaign, saying there should be a focus on getting out the vote and focusing on policy to win the state of Georgia and the election in November.
