Former FBI Director James Comey has once again stepped into the spotlight—this time, not for his controversial handling of investigations, threats to POTUS. or political decisions, but for a bizarre social media post that has left many Americans scratching their heads. In a video posted to Substack on Sunday, Comey professed his admiration for pop star Taylor Swift, calling her a “truly inspirational public figure” while simultaneously criticizing President Donald Trump and his supporters.
The video, quickly mocked across social media, showcases Comey gushing over Swift’s music, describing himself as a “Swiftie” and even quoting his favorite songs. The spectacle might have passed as awkward celebrity fanfare if he wasn’t the disgraced former director of the FBI and it hadn’t been laden with anti-conservative undertones. Comey lamented what he called the “meanness” and “coarseness” in American society, blaming it squarely on Republicans and Trump voters, whom he labeled as “jerks.”
The real issue isn’t Comey’s musical taste—it’s his ongoing descent into partisan theatrics. Once entrusted with leading the nation’s top law enforcement agency, Comey now appears more interested in virtue-signaling through pop culture than reflecting on the significant missteps during his FBI tenure.
Let’s not forget this is the same James Comey who helped ignite national controversy in 2016 when he announced the reopening of the Hillary Clinton email investigation just days before the presidential election, only to close it again without charges. His actions drew ire from both sides of the aisle—but particularly from conservatives who long suspected a lack of accountability and partisanship within the Bureau.
Then came the 2020s, and with them, Comey’s increasingly odd online behavior. Earlier this year, he participated in the “86 47” trend on TikTok—an anti-Trump movement that many linked to far-left protest rhetoric and, in some cases, violence. Though he later tried to distance himself from the trend, the damage was done, he had shown his hand.
And now, in a video that’s been labeled everything from “creepy” to “unhinged,” Comey essentially canonizes Swift while bashing half the country for daring to disagree with him politically. He ends the video with a breathy, “[Thank you, Taylor Swift. Keep the faith],” an oddly emotional tribute that feels less like a political message and more like a misguided love letter.
Critics from across the conservative sphere were swift in their condemnation.
Commentator Liz Wheeler called the video “creepy,” noting the awkward optics of a grown man fawning over a singer who was just 19 or 20 when Comey first became a fan. “What a weirdo,” she posted on X. Others questioned whether the video was even real. “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE AI,” posted @CynicalPublius. “Because I’m not sure I can deal with the idea that America once entrusted the FBI to this lunatic traitor.”
RedState contributor @Bonchie added, “This dude was FBI Director. Let that sink in. Let it marinate.”
Columnist Miranda Devine summed up the sentiment of many Americans when she wrote, “This is pathetic on so many levels, it’s hard to express.”
