Careful Dems, your OG pantsuit queen once called for law banning flag burning, too

by

As the radical Left derides President Donald Trump for taking decisive action to protect one of the most sacred symbols of American patriotism—the American flag—a resurfaced video clip exposes the blatant hypocrisy of one of their most prominent leaders. In 2006, then-Senator Hillary Clinton, a Democrat from New York, passionately advocated for legislation that would criminalize the desecration of the American flag, mirroring the very stance President Trump would later be mocked for holding.

Clinton, standing on the Senate floor nearly two decades ago, expressed her unequivocal support for the Flag Protection Act, a proposed law that aimed to make flag desecration a criminal offense. “I hope, Mr. President, that we can pass a law that criminalizes flag burning and desecration,” Clinton declared. Her comments were not ambiguous—they were a clear call for legal action against those who burn the American flag in protest.

She went even further, stating, “I agree wholeheartedly that maliciously burning or destroying an American flag is a deeply offensive and despicable act.” Clinton recognized what many Americans instinctively feel: that the act of burning the flag is not a form of noble protest, but a vile insult to the nation and the brave men and women who serve it. “It disrespects our nation,” she said. “It belittles the sacrifices of our brave veterans, it even sends a message to the soldiers who fight today protecting our freedom that their service is in some way to be disrespected and discounted.”

Clinton even cited the 2003 Supreme Court case Virginia v. Black, which ruled that burning a cross with the intent to intimidate could be criminalized. Drawing a parallel to flag burning, she remarked, “Now burning a flag to me is also despicable,” and suggested that the emotional and symbolic significance of the flag made its desecration an act of intimidation. She concluded that Americans “have a right to ask this body to try to prohibit and prevent” such desecration.

Fast forward to this week, and President Trump, in stark contrast to the soft-on-America posture of today’s Democratic Party, took concrete steps to defend the flag and the values it represents. In an executive order, Trump directed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to enforce criminal and civil penalties for acts of flag desecration. The order called for a mandatory one-year jail sentence for those who engage in flag burning—a bold move aimed at restoring respect for national symbols.

Moreover, the executive order went beyond domestic enforcement. It authorized the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to act against foreign nationals who desecrate the American flag. This included measures such as denying visas, revoking residence permits, and terminating naturalization proceedings. In short, Trump sent a clear message: anyone who disrespects the flag—American or not—has no place enjoying the privileges of this country.

While President Trump acted with patriotic resolve, today’s Democrats scoff at his efforts, conveniently forgetting that one of their own once echoed nearly identical views. The hypocrisy is glaring. When Clinton called for banning flag desecration, it was “principled.” When Trump enforces it, it’s “authoritarian”?
