‘How dare you?’: Ex-dem lawmaker loses it when Conservative commentator invokes ‘brokenness of the black family’

Former Democratic state Sen. Nina Turner of Ohio lost her temper on Monday when conservative commentator Liz Wheeler invoked “the brokenness of the black family” during a discussion about a stabbing in North Carolina.

Homeless ex-convict DeCarlos Brown allegedly stabbed 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte on a light rail train on Aug. 22. When NewsNation host Chris Cuomo asked Wheeler on NewsNation’s “CUOMO” how to prevent incidents like this, she criticized black families as part of her answer, prompting Turner to snap.

“The second part is the brokenness of the nuclear family, the brokenness of the black family, the fact that black fathers are absent and that young black men turn to drugs and gangs,” Wheeler said.

“Oh no. You not going to sit up here and talk about the brokenness of the black family. How dare you? … Don’t single out the black family,” Turner responded. “Do not single out the black family. There’s lots of love and support in the black community, Liz. The nerve. The nerve of you.”

Cuomo called out Wheeler for zeroing in on blacks, but she doubled down.

“It’s especially evident in the black community,” she said.

Brown’s mother told WSOC-TV on Monday that a court should not have allowed him to be free — given his mental problems and previous arrests — after he was arrested for abusing the 911 system.

Brown unsheathed a pocket knife and allegedly stabbed Zarutska three times, including at least once in her throat, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, WBTV reported. Footage of the incident showed Brown walking through the rail car after the attack, stripping his red sweatshirt as passengers observed blood dripping off him.

Officers arrested Brown following his treatment for a hand laceration. Court records indicate Brown had multiple arrests spanning back to 2011, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, larceny and communicating threats.

Zarutska was pronounced dead on the train. Police have not determined a motive for the alleged homicide.

  1. People like Turner who continue to deny the obvious truth about black families today is the reason all the black-on-black killings continue, and so many young black men are turning to crime. Deny all you want. The truth tells a different story.
