LA county’s ’emergency’ declaration over ICE opens floodgates for taxpayer funded aid to illegals

by

In a stunning display of priorities, Los Angeles County officials declared a local state of emergency this week—not for crime, homelessness, or the fentanyl crisis—but because federal immigration agents had the audacity to enforce the law.

On Tuesday, LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath’s office issued the emergency proclamation in response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across the region. That’s right—an “emergency” over ICE doing its job.

Horvath attempted to justify the move, stating, “What’s happening in our communities is an emergency and Los Angeles County is treating it like one.” She added, “Declaring a Local Emergency ensures that the full weight of County government is aligned to support our immigrant communities who are being targeted by federal actions.”

Targeted? No, the law is being enforced. And the people impacted are—by definition—here illegally.

The county’s declaration opens the floodgates to funnel taxpayer dollars toward “rent relief,” legal aid, and other forms of support for illegal immigrants—meanwhile, many law-abiding Angelenos are still struggling to rebuild from wildfires, economic instability, and skyrocketing crime.

The Board of Supervisors passed the emergency declaration in a 4–1 vote on October 9, instructing county departments to take “necessary emergency actions to protect and stabilize communities impacted by federal immigration actions.” In other words, LA County is throwing a bureaucratic tantrum over ICE arresting people with outstanding deportation orders.

The usual chorus of left-wing supervisors chimed in with emotional appeals. Supervisor Janice Hahn claimed, “We have entire families who are destitute because their fathers or mothers were taken from their workplaces,” and insisted the community was gripped by “fear, pain and disorder.” Supervisor Holly Mitchell pushed the narrative further, blaming the raids for sparking “race-based violence and hate.”

But not everyone drank the Kool-Aid.

Board Chair Kathryn Barger, the lone dissenting vote, injected some much-needed sanity: “The federal government has sole authority to enforce federal immigration law, and local governments cannot impede that authority.” She rightly warned that LA County’s stunt could trigger legal repercussions and urged policymakers to focus on genuine immigration reform, not political grandstanding.

Even ICE weighed in with a mic-drop of a response. A spokesperson told Fox News Digital, “The only state of emergency is the one the residents of Los Angeles face after electing officials who give a middle finger to the law.”

The statement didn’t stop there. ICE spokesperson Emily Convington added, “Perhaps the board should ‘supervise’ funds to support law-abiding fire victims who still haven’t recovered, instead of criminal illegal aliens seeking refuge in their sanctuary city. While they publicly fear-monger, I would be shocked if they didn’t agree with ICE removing a child rapist from their neighborhood.”

Ouch. And fair.

For a county grappling with surging homelessness, violent crime, and a public services crisis, declaring an emergency over immigration enforcement reeks of political theater. When illegal status becomes a protected class and law enforcement is villainized, it’s no wonder California is bleeding residents.

Here’s a radical idea: maybe the real emergency is a county government more concerned with shielding illegal immigrants from ICE than protecting the rights and safety of its own law-abiding citizens.
