In a press conference that looked more like a temper tantrum than leadership, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) launched an unhinged personal attack on White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday—seemingly out of nowhere—during remarks about a controversy involving a Nazi symbol planted in a GOP office.
“You’ve got Karoline Leavitt, who’s sick. She’s out of control. And I’m not sure whether she’s just demented, ignorant, a stone-cold liar, or all of the above,” Jeffries said, setting a new low in political decorum as the government shutdown entered its 17th day.
What triggered this meltdown? That part remains unclear. Leavitt wasn’t part of the incident in question. But it didn’t stop Jeffries from dragging her into the spotlight—likely as a distraction from the very real questions facing Democrats.
Jeffries was fielding questions about a swastika symbol that was reportedly found embedded in a small American flag posted on a corkboard in the office of Rep. Dave Taylor (R-OH). The image was first publicized by a local Ohio social media personality who posts under the X handle “The Rooster.”
Rather than waiting for facts—or even acknowledging the explanation provided—Jeffries pivoted to attacking a Republican woman working in the Trump White House.
Leavitt’s apparent sin? Calling out Democrats for enabling chaos, crime, and open borders. According to Jeffries, “the notion that an official White House spokesperson would say that the Democratic Party consists of terrorists, violent criminals, and undocumented immigrants makes no sense.” No clarification on which part he disagreed with.
As for Rep. Taylor, he clarified that the disgusting flag had not been created or displayed by anyone in his office. Instead, he revealed that multiple Republican offices had been targeted in a coordinated hit job meant to frame and smear conservatives.
“New details have emerged from a coordinated investigation into the vile symbol that appeared in my office,” Taylor said in a statement to Fox News. “Numerous Republican offices have confirmed that they were targeted by an unidentified group or individual who distributed American flags bearing a similar symbol, which were initially indistinguishable from an ordinary American flag to the naked eye.”
Taylor added that “after a full-scale internal investigation, I am confident that no employee of this office would knowingly display such a despicable image,” and emphasized that the flag was immediately removed once the symbol was discovered.
In other words, this was a setup—and Democrats are using it to score cheap political points. And when that didn’t work, Jeffries chose to go after Leavitt, rather than condemn whoever is actually responsible for the disgusting stunt.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, the government remains shut down, and not because Republicans haven’t tried to fix it.
Last month, the GOP proposed a seven-week continuing resolution to keep government funded at FY2025 levels while negotiations continued for a long-term FY2026 deal. But Senate Democrats blocked the bill—for the fourth time—then conveniently skipped town for the weekend.
Why? Because they’re refusing to accept any agreement that doesn’t include big-ticket healthcare giveaways, like extending COVID-era Obamacare subsidies set to expire by year’s end.
So while Republicans are trying to keep the government open, Democrats are playing political theater and throwing tantrums at press conferences. Jeffries may not have answers, but he sure knows how to throw a fit—and attack a woman just doing her job.
