Hillary Clinton tried taking a wrecking ball to Donald Trump’s latest project at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but social media users quickly reminded her she’d already taken a few swings at the White House—literally and figuratively—during her own time there.
On Tuesday, the former first lady and two-time failed presidential candidate took to X to complain about the ongoing renovations at the White House. Specifically, demolition on the East Wing that began Monday to make room for a new $250 million ballroom, funded entirely by private donations.
“It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it,” Hillary posted, including a photo from The Washington Post showing rubble from the initial teardown.
Critics were quick to call out her historical amnesia.
“A Clinton would never defile the White House,” former Trump staffer Alex Pfeiffer jabbed sarcastically.
Writer Mark Hemingway was more direct:
“Yes, between selling nights in the Lincoln Bedroom to donors and her husband’s tutelage of the interns in the Oval Office, if anyone treated the WH as sacred it was the Clintons.”
He wasn’t exaggerating. The Clintons were famously accused of turning the Lincoln Bedroom into a donor reward suite, offering overnight stays in exchange for hefty campaign contributions. And of course, there was the not-so-minor matter of Bill Clinton’s infamous affair with intern Monica Lewinsky—something most Americans haven’t exactly forgotten, even if Hillary would prefer they did.
And when the Clintons finally packed up and left the White House in 2001? They didn’t leave empty-handed.
“I remember when the Clintons stole the people’s furniture and tableware,” conservative columnist David Harsanyi wrote in response to Hillary’s post.
In fact, the Clintons were found to have taken $28,000 worth of items that belonged to the permanent White House collection, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars in other furnishings. After public outcry and pressure, they were forced to return many of the items.
Notably, the current White House renovation isn’t exactly an unprecedented act of presidential vanity. Renovations have long been a tradition for incoming first families.
“Almost every president has done renovations to the White House, including the Clintons who did a big spread in House Beautiful in 1993 about theirs,” journalist Salena Zito reminded followers.
Zito also pointed out that the East Wing façade being demolished isn’t exactly a sacred national artifact. It was added in 1942 under Franklin D. Roosevelt—not part of the original structure.
President Trump’s vision is to build a 90,000-square-foot “White House State Ballroom” that can host up to 650 guests. According to Trump, the construction is being fully financed by private donors, with zero burden on taxpayers.
The president’s son, Eric Trump, took the opportunity to twist the knife just a bit further, tying the Clintons’ failed humanitarian efforts to the debate:
“The ballroom will be spectacular… unlike your work in Haiti,” he posted.
The White House press office didn’t hold back either. Spokesman Davis Ingle told The Post:
“Failed presidential candidate and former first lady Crooked Hillary Clinton stole furniture from the White House on her way out until she was forced to return it. Crooked Hillary is shameless and a total disgrace.”
Ingle added:
“Meanwhile, President Trump is restoring the White House to its proper glory for Americans to enjoy for generations to come — at no expense to the taxpayer — something we should all celebrate.”
The new ballroom is expected to be completed well before Trump leaves office—in 2029.
It’s hard to claim someone else is “destroying” the people’s house when you were last seen walking out the door with the China.
