In one of the most dramatic moments in recent pageant history, more than a dozen contestants of the Miss Universe 2025 stormed out of a pre-pageant event in Thailand in protest after an executive member publicly berated a peer. The controversy premiered on a live stream and rapidly became a global talking point about power, respect and the role of women in international pageantry.
The confrontation unfolded on 4 November 2025 during a pre-pageant “sash-ceremony” event held in Bangkok under the auspices of the Thai host franchise. The lash-out began when Nawat Itsaragrisil — executive director of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) and national director of the Thai host — publicly called on Fátima Bosch (Miss Mexico) to stand and explain why she had declined to participate in a sponsor-promotional shoot.
What followed escalated quickly: He reportedly told Bosch that, “If you follow the order from your national director, you’re a dumb head.”
Bosch responded: “Because I have a voice… You are not respecting me as a woman.”
At his direction, security was called in to escort Bosch from the room.
In response, reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig (Denmark) rose from her seat and walked out, followed by numerous other contestants in solidarity with Bosch.
The MUO quickly moved to contain the fallout. In a statement, president Raúl Rocha Cantú condemned the episode, saying that he “will not allow the values of respect and dignity toward women to be violated.” He announced that Itsaragrisil’s participation in the remaining events of Miss Universe 2025 would be restricted, and that a delegation of executives and legal experts would travel to Thailand to oversee the remainder of the pageant.
Itsaragrisil later posted an apology, acknowledging that if anyone felt uncomfortable, “I sincerely apologize.” Meanwhile, Bosch and the Miss Mexico organization demanded that no woman should be subjected to “insult or humiliation” and emphasized that dignity matters more than any crown.
MUO also reaffirmed that despite the dispute, all scheduled events will continue “as planned,” emphasizing commitments to diversity, empowerment and inclusion.
“I truly love Thailand… but what your director just did was not respectful… If something costs you your dignity, you need to go,” Bosch said.
Theilvig agreed, “We have respect for everyone, but this is not how things can be handled. To trash another girl — it’s beyond disrespectful.”
With the competition set to culminate on 21 November 2025, the organization has mandated that judging will adhere strictly to four official categories: The personal interview, national-costume, evening gown and swimsuit presentations. Any promotional or behind-the-scenes activity is not meant to influence scoring. Whether this episode changes longer-term practices around delegation treatment remains to be seen.
