Kannapolis, NC — What started as a student-led walkout against ICE operations in nearby Charlotte exploded into tabloid-level drama Friday afternoon when 18-year-old Emily Cervantes Ramos allegedly stormed up behind a police officer and slammed a full plastic cup over his head, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Witness video shows the officer — who had been silently standing by as demonstrators hurled insults like “You’re not even an officer, you’re just a no-life ass bitch!” — suddenly jolting forward as liquid splashed down his uniform. Ramos immediately bolted.
The crowd erupted with a collective “Ohhh!” as the officer sprinted after her. The chase didn’t last long. Ramos was tackled to the pavement and surrounded by officers while protesters shouted things like, “She didn’t even do anything!”
Police say she very much did. Ramos was arrested and booked on charges of assault on a government official and resisting police. Officials confirmed she was the only person arrested out of the roughly 75 demonstrators — most of them students from A.L. Brown High School who had staged a walkout.

Though it remains unclear whether Ramos is a student herself, authorities say officers were only on scene for standard crowd safety until tensions escalated.
But the controversy didn’t end with her arrest. Within hours, a GoFundMe popped up claiming Ramos — not the officer — was the victim. The fundraiser insisted an officer had “intervened aggressively, snatching a bullhorn from a young girl and dragging her to the ground,” calling the situation “one of the most distressing things many of us have ever witnessed.” Notably missing from the page? Any mention of the alleged drink attack.
The fundraiser has since disappeared.
Meanwhile, police are standing firm. Kannapolis Police Chief Terry Spry told WCNC, “We believe in every individual’s First Amendment rights, but if any person’s actions become illegal… we have no choice but to take appropriate action to protect the people and property of our city.”
Chaos, chases, conflicting narratives — all in a day’s protest.
