Schumer blocks DHS deal, TSA loses paychecks, lines stretch for hours

by

Because of a prolonged funding standoff involving the Chuck Schumer–led Senate, workers at the Transportation Security Administration are reportedly on the brink of missing another paycheck. The ongoing shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is now threatening not just federal employees’ livelihoods but the travel plans of millions of Americans.

With the shutdown dragging on, airport security checkpoints are already feeling the strain. Travelers are reporting wait times stretching for hours, a situation likely to worsen as spring travel ramps up and people flee the Northeast after a harsh winter.

Inside Washington, the stalemate continues with little sign of compromise. Yet another missed paycheck by TSA applies pressure on lawmakers to get a deal.

At the center of the dispute is a demand from Democrats regarding enforcement powers for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to statements from the Senate side, the shutdown continues because Democrats are pushing strict new limits on where ICE agents can operate.

One explanation from Hakeem Jeffries of the aisle put it plainly:

“We’re in a DHS shutdown right now because Republicans have refused to agree to… keep ICE out of sensitive locations… polling sites. We want an explicit prohibition that ICE can go nowhere near any polling sites in the United States of America. We’re not going to bend on it.”

Republicans argue the demand crosses a dangerous line—tying the funding of America’s national security apparatus to election-related conditions. Critics say the result is a political standoff that leaves critical agencies unfunded while global tensions simmer, including ongoing instability involving Iran.

Meanwhile, the practical consequences are mounting.

The argument gaining traction on the right is that Republicans should stop negotiating under threat and move decisively—potentially including eliminating the Senate filibuster to pass funding legislation outright and push forward measures like the SAVE America Act.

Supporters say such a move would both secure elections and restore full funding to DHS without the current political brinkmanship.
