Former First Lady Jill Biden is preparing to lift the curtain on her years inside the White House — and the timing is raising eyebrows.
On Wednesday, the 74-year-old revealed the cover of the new memoir she intends to publish, “View from the East Wing,” promising readers a personal account of the tumultuous years when her husband, Joe Biden, occupied the Oval Office.
The book, scheduled for release June 2 by Gallery Books, will supposedly revisit the high-stakes drama that culminated in the summer of 2024 when the 46th president stunned the political world by stepping aside and declining to seek a second term.
In a video announcement posted to Instagram — notably without her husband appearing beside her — the former first lady hinted that the public has only heard part of the story.
“Parts of this story have been told, but not all of it,” Biden said.
She promised readers an inside account of the moment her husband bowed out of the race, explaining that she plans to describe “what that moment meant for our family and for me personally, after years of public service together.”
Insiders say Jill Biden kept a detailed diary throughout her White House years — notes that could now form the backbone of her narrative. I’m sure every word of it will be 100 percent truthful. Wink, wink.
But critics argue that if the book truly pulls back the curtain, it could also reveal uncomfortable truths about the role she played as her husband’s abilities came under increasing scrutiny.
In the bestselling political book Original Sin, journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson described a tight inner circle surrounding the aging president — even referring to it as a “Politburo.” According to their reporting, the group gradually took on more authority as the president’s capacity reportedly weakened.
Jill Biden, they wrote, was a central figure in that circle and made it clear when she believed aides had mishandled her husband’s public appearances.
The former first lady says writing the book has been emotional. “I wrote about all the, you know, sometimes painful — but other times, most of it really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency,” she told the Associated Press, describing the project as “kind of cathartic.”
Biden is no stranger to publishing. She previously released two children’s books and a 2019 memoir, Where the Light Enters, recounting her family’s earlier political years.
Washington insiders suspect the upcoming memoir could serve another purpose: settling old grudges.
Jill Biden has long been known in political circles for holding onto slights, and she reportedly admired the brutally candid royal memoir Spare by Prince Harry.
If that admiration is any guide, the new book could include pointed reflections on the Democrats who pushed Joe Biden toward the exit in 2024.
Among those frequently mentioned as critics or pressure points were former President Barack Obama, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, and even Hollywood heavyweight George Clooney, who publicly urged the party to move on from the embattled president.
Another relationship long rumored to be strained is the one with former Vice President Kamala Harris. Tensions reportedly date back to a fiery 2019 Democratic primary debate, when Harris criticized Joe Biden’s record on civil rights.
The memoir may also carry financial importance for the Biden family. While Joe Biden reportedly received a $10 million advance for his own forthcoming presidential memoir — which still lacks a publication date — the amount Jill Biden received has not been disclosed.
Financial filings from 2024 showed the Bidens carrying personal debts of up to $815,000, while the president’s son Hunter Biden has accumulated millions in legal expenses tied to his ongoing legal troubles.
Unlike many former presidents, lucrative board seats and speaking deals have not flooded in since Joe Biden left office.
Jill Biden currently chairs the Milken Institute Women’s Health Network, but a blockbuster memoir could prove to be the most significant payday yet.
