“X-rated chocolate recall: FDA sounds alarm over hidden ingredients

by

Two so-called “aphrodisiac” chocolate products are being yanked off shelves nationwide after federal health officials uncovered a not-so-sweet surprise hidden inside: prescription-strength drug ingredients that were never disclosed to consumers.

California outfit Gear Isle is pulling specific batches of its provocatively marketed “Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate” and “ilum Sex Chocolate” after testing exposed the presence of sildenafil and tadalafil — the same active compounds found in erectile dysfunction medications.

The alarming discovery was flagged in a warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which said the products had been sold online across the country under the guise of harmless dietary supplements.

But there’s nothing harmless about what’s inside.

Health officials are sounding the alarm that these undeclared ingredients could trigger severe reactions — especially for men taking nitrate medications for heart issues. Mixing the two can send blood pressure crashing to dangerously low levels.

The FDA warned the combination could lead to a sudden and potentially “life-threatening” drop. “Among the adult male population who are most likely to use these products, adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions are most at risk from these products,” the agency said.

The recall specifically targets:

  • Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Male Enhancement Sachet (UPC: 795847916279, expiration June 2027)
  • ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Booster (UPC: 1002448578911, expiration Dec. 25, 2027)

Despite the bombshell findings, Gear Isle claims it hasn’t received any reports of consumers suffering adverse effects — at least not yet. Still, officials aren’t taking chances.

Customers are being told to stop using the products immediately and return them for a refund. Anyone feeling unusual symptoms is urged to seek medical attention right away. This isn’t an isolated case, either.

Earlier this month, New Mexico-based Primal Supplements Group LLC also issued a voluntary recall of its Primal Herbs “Volume” sexual enhancement supplement after it, too, was found to contain hidden sildenafil, according to the FDA.
