Cooperating witnesses in Brennan probe subpoenaed before grand jury

Senior intelligence and law enforcement officials working with the Department of Justice’s probe into former CIA Director John Brennan were issued subpoenas to testify before a grand jury.

The subpoenas of the FBI and other intelligence officials were issued after the DOJ had directed an attorney aligned with President Donald Trump to take over the investigation, according to CBS News. The probe into Brennan centers around false statements he provided to Congress regarding his involvement in investigations between the Russian Government and Trump’s 2016 campaign.

The reported subpoenas come after the FBI reportedly ramped up its investigation into Brennan’s comments over his involvement in crafting an assessment suggesting a connection between the Trump campaign and Russia.

A top prosecutor had also reportedly been removed from the investigation after suggesting that there was not enough evidence to make a case, CBS News reported on Friday.

The DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Brennan has long-since been the target of multiple probes and investigations into the handling of the Trump-Russia probe, along with intelligence-gathering activities.

U.S. Attorney John Durham interviewed Brennan for more than eight hours in 2020 over his activities before the 2016 presidential election and the community assessment about Russia meddling in the campaign. Durham’s 2023 report found that the FBI used “uncorroborated intelligence” to launch its investigation.

Brennan came under investigation again in 2025, alongside former FBI Director James Comey, for alleged wrongdoing in handling the now-discredited Christopher Steele dossier. The investigation stems from current CIA Director John Ratcliffe referring Brennan’s reported misconduct to current FBI Director Kash Patel over a “lessons learned” review into the 2017 assessment.

The House Judiciary Committee also referred Brennan to the DOJ for criminal prosecution in October 2025, claiming he “knowingly made false statements” to Congress.

“In sum, Brennan’s testimony before the Committee on May 11, 2023, was a brazen attempt to knowingly and willfully testify falsely and fictitiously to material facts,” Committee Chair Jim Jordan wrote in the statement. “We therefore make this referral for the Department to examine whether any of Brennan’s testimony warrants a charge for the violation of [federal law].”
