Washington was celebrating mixed martial arts and military pageantry. Alleged extremists, according to federal authorities, were allegedly plotting something far darker.
The FBI says it has arrested five individuals tied to a foiled, multi-layered terror scheme that officials claim was aimed at Sunday’s UFC Freedom 250 event on the White House South Lawn — a high-profile spectacle attended by roughly 4,300 people, including more than a thousand active-duty service members and timed to coincide with President Trump’s 80th birthday.
According to law enforcement sources cited in Fox News Digital, the alleged plan wasn’t just some scattershot disruption. It was described as a coordinated, multi-phase operation that reads more like a dystopian screenplay than a real-world plot.
Authorities say the first phase allegedly involved explosive-laden drones targeting structures near the event site, with the intent of triggering mass panic among attendees. As crowds fled, investigators say a second component of the plan allegedly envisioned a sniper team waiting to open fire on people escaping the initial chaos. And if that wasn’t enough, a “second wave” of attackers was allegedly prepared to storm a White House gate amid the confusion.
The FBI says it first caught wind of the alleged scheme on June 10. A search warrant executed in Cincinnati led to the first arrest, setting off a multi-state dragnet that eventually netted five suspects.
Some of the individuals under investigation allegedly traveled to Fredericksburg, Virginia on June 12 or 13 to carry out reconnaissance and preparations ahead of the planned attack.
In a disturbing detail uncovered during the probe, authorities reportedly reviewed a suspect’s iPhone and found discussions involving at least 23 users on the encrypted messaging app Signal, allegedly coordinating aspects of what officials describe as a potential mass-casualty attack in the nation’s capital.
One suspect allegedly told investigators the group’s supposed motivation included targeting “capitalist elites,” “billionaires” and politicians tied to funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
FBI Director Kash Patel credited rapid coordination between agencies for stopping what he called a catastrophe in the making.
“Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold,” Patel said in a statement.
The alleged plot, if proven in court, would have turned what was meant to be a patriotic showcase of sport and military pride into a national security nightmare unfolding steps from the White House.
