Paul Pelosi faces hit-and-run charge, latest crash revives long history of driving controversies

by

DBS WIRE: Associated Press — Paul Pelosi in hit-and-run in California, car left with major damage, authorities say

For most people, a hit-and-run investigation at age 86 would be an isolated incident. For Paul Pelosi, critics say it’s become part of a much longer story.

The husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is facing potential misdemeanor charges after Napa County authorities say he struck a legally parked vehicle in Yountville on July 3 and then left the scene. Witnesses reported seeing Pelosi’s brown convertible collide with the unoccupied vehicle before driving away. Deputies later located Pelosi and documented major front-end damage to his vehicle. Authorities say alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

According to investigators, Pelosi acknowledged that he knew he had struck something but allegedly continued driving because he was unsure what he had hit. The case has been referred to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for review. Authorities have also initiated a standard DMV re-evaluation of Pelosi’s driving capabilities because of his age.

The incident immediately revived memories of Pelosi’s highly publicized 2022 DUI arrest in Napa County.

That crash occurred when Pelosi attempted to cross State Route 29 in his Porsche and collided with another vehicle. Prosecutors later said his blood alcohol level measured 0.082%, slightly above California’s legal limit. Pelosi ultimately pleaded guilty to driving under the influence causing injury and received probation, fines, a DUI education program and a short jail sentence.

Now, as Napa authorities review yet another driving incident, attention has shifted beyond the 2022 DUI case to a little-known tragedy from Pelosi’s youth.

In February 1957, a teenage Paul Pelosi was involved in a devastating rollover crash near San Mateo that killed his older brother, David Pelosi. Contemporary newspaper accounts reported that the vehicle flipped and came to rest upside down after leaving the roadway. David Pelosi, 19, was killed in the accident, while Paul survived. Authorities at the time cited Pelosi for misdemeanor manslaughter, though he was later cleared by a coroner’s jury.

Records from subsequent years also show minor traffic infractions, including citations involving a red-light violation and crossing over a center line.

None of those incidents are directly connected to the current Napa County investigation. Still, the latest crash has renewed scrutiny of Pelosi’s driving history at a moment when public officials and their families are already under heightened public examination.

Neither Nancy Pelosi nor her office immediately offered extensive public comment regarding the incident.

For now, prosecutors will determine whether the latest crash results in formal charges. The case that might have received little notice if it involved an ordinary retiree has become national news because of the Pelosi name and a record that stretches back nearly seven decades.

If this were the husband of a Republican speaker, CNN would already have a six-part documentary, a podcast series, and a primetime special called The Road to Recklessness.

Instead, much of the coverage has the tone of a concerned neighbor explaining that Grandpa accidentally backed into the mailbox again.

Let’s be fair. The 1957 accident was a genuine tragedy. A teenager made a mistake, and a family suffered a loss that would stay with them forever. That deserves compassion, not cheap political points.

The current issue is different.

At some point, the question stops being about politics and starts being about common sense. When an 86-year-old driver is involved in yet another significant incident and authorities are asking for a DMV review, it’s reasonable to ask whether it’s time to hand over the keys.

Millions of American families have had that difficult conversation with aging parents. It isn’t fun. It isn’t partisan. It’s reality.

What makes this story interesting is that it exposes the media’s double standard. When Republicans stumble, we’re told character matters. When Democrats stumble, we’re told privacy matters.

I suspect the media will suddenly discover a newfound appreciation for personal freedom.
