AOC-backed dating app aims to screen out conservatives before the first date

TOTAL BS:

WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is backing a new dating platform designed to prevent politically incompatible Americans from meeting, part of a broader effort to ensure romantic relationships do not expose users to beliefs they have already rejected online.

The platform, called Comrade, will use voting records, consumer data and social-media activity to determine whether prospective couples share what its founders describe as “minimum democratic values.”

The announcement followed Ocasio-Cortez’s acknowledgment this week that she would probably not date a conservative.

“I think a lot of politics, at least for me, is about values,” the New York Democrat said when approached outside the Capitol. “Being aligned in values, I think, is tremendously important.”

Comrade’s founders said that principle should be applied before two people meet, eliminating the possibility that political differences might emerge gradually through conversation.

“For decades, Americans were expected to sit across a table from another person and discover what that person believed,” the company said in a statement. “That model is no longer appropriate.”

Applicants will complete an extensive screening process intended to distinguish ordinary liberals from users who may claim to be progressive while privately holding unauthorized opinions.

The review will examine political donations, podcast subscriptions, vehicle ownership and whether an applicant has ever expressed concern about government spending without immediately identifying a Republican responsible for it.

Those approved for membership will be assigned a compatibility score based on how closely their stated beliefs correspond with the current Democratic Party platform. Scores will be adjusted automatically as the platform changes.

Company officials said the technology is especially useful for issues on which an acceptable position may have shifted since a user created an account.

“We do not want members placed in the uncomfortable position of dating someone who held the correct opinion in 2022 but failed to update it in 2025,” a Comrade representative said.

The service will initially be available in Washington, New York and several neighborhoods in Los Angeles where developers believe the dating pool is politically diverse enough to require additional protection.

Republicans will not be formally prohibited from applying. Instead, the platform will direct them to a separate page explaining that their participation could make other users feel unsafe.

Comrade will also offer an appeals process for applicants who believe they were mistakenly classified as conservative. To qualify, they must submit three character references and a written statement describing the harm caused by being associated with the political right.

The platform has drawn support from Democratic consultants who have struggled to reconcile the party’s stated commitment to national unity with its growing preference for avoiding Americans who vote differently.

They argue that political segregation in dating could ultimately reduce polarization by ensuring that no one encounters an opposing argument in an emotionally meaningful setting.

Critics warned that the service could further isolate Americans inside ideological communities. Comrade rejected that concern, noting that users will still be exposed to a wide range of viewpoints, from establishment Democrats to progressives who believe establishment Democrats are fascists.

Ocasio-Cortez has not said whether she intends to join the platform. Company officials said her account has nevertheless been preapproved and all registered Republicans have already been blocked.

“This is not about telling people whom they can love,” the company said. “It is about making certain they never love the wrong person.”
