Interim Sen. Darline Graham announced Monday that she will run for a full six-year term representing South Carolina, transforming what began as a temporary appointment into one of the GOP’s most closely watched Senate primaries of the 2026 election cycle.
Graham, who was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster to complete the remainder of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s term following his death earlier this month, confirmed her decision during an interview with Sean Hannity.
“I’ve made a decision—I’m in,” Graham said during the interview, ending days of speculation about whether she would enter the race.
Her campaign immediately becomes one of the highest-profile contests of the midterm cycle, due in part to President Trump’s endorsement. Before Graham formally entered the race, Trump publicly urged her to run, describing her as a patriot and saying no one would better honor her brother’s legacy.
The Republican field is expected to be competitive. Rep. Ralph Norman has already announced his candidacy, while Rep. Russell Fry is also running. The filing period closes July 28, with the Republican special primary scheduled for Aug. 11. The winner will advance to the November general election against Democrat Annie Andrews.
The announcement also generated criticism online after Mediaite highlighted posts from several conservative commentators who questioned whether a close family member should move directly from an interim appointment to seeking a full term. Some described the situation as resembling a political inheritance, while others argued that South Carolina voters—not party leaders or appointments—will make the final decision at the ballot box.
“Hard pass. Birthright senatorship is idiotic,” said Sean Davis, the CEO of the Federalist.
Supporters counter that Graham was legally appointed under South Carolina law, that she has years of public service experience outside elected office, and that she still must compete in a contested primary before earning a full Senate term.
Although Graham has never before held elected office, she previously served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and worked in several state government positions. During recent interviews, she has indicated she intends to focus heavily on economic and “pocketbook” issues while honoring her brother’s legacy of public service.
The campaign now shifts from an appointment story to a competitive election, with South Carolina Republicans set to decide in just a few weeks whether Graham should continue serving beyond the end of this year.
