President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of Democrat-led states Tuesday, arguing that high taxes and business regulations are accelerating an exodus of employers and high-income taxpayers that could leave some states facing long-term economic decline.
Writing on Truth Social Tuesday morning, Trump issued a blunt warning about what he believes is happening in several traditionally Democratic strongholds.
“Rich people and Companies are pouring out of Dumocrat run Blue States at levels never seen before! If this trend continues, these States will become the ‘Ghettos’ of the Future — No people, no money, no hope.”
He concluded the post with his signature campaign slogan:
“MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump’s comments came shortly after he highlighted a report examining Illinois’ business climate following True Value’s announcement that it will relocate its headquarters from Chicago to Fort Wayne, Indiana.
According to the report, the hardware company joins a list of major firms that have either relocated or shifted headquarters out of Illinois in recent years, including Boeing, Tyson Foods, Caterpillar and Morton Salt.
The relocation follows Do it Best Group’s acquisition of True Value and will consolidate corporate operations in Fort Wayne, where Do it Best is already headquartered. Company executives said bringing leadership together under one roof would improve collaboration and decision-making.
Illinois Republicans have seized on the move as another example of what they describe as an increasingly difficult business climate.
State Sen. Chris Balkema argued businesses consistently point to regulations and taxes as major concerns when evaluating whether to remain in Illinois.
“The top two things that businesses fear about Illinois… is rules and regulations,” Balkema said while discussing the headquarters relocation.
Trump has frequently sparred with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and has repeatedly argued that high-tax states are pushing employers and investment elsewhere.
California has experienced similar high-profile departures in recent years, with companies including Chevron, Oracle, Tesla and SpaceX relocating headquarters or major operations outside the state while citing various business considerations, including taxes, regulations and operational flexibility.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously questioned California’s tax structure after relocating Tesla’s headquarters to Texas.
“I’m pretty sure I’ve paid the most taxes of any individual ever to California, but it isn’t obvious what is done with the money.”
These moves validate longstanding Republican warnings that excessive taxation and regulation discourage investment and job creation.
