‘He lost!’ Geraldo and O’Reilly erupt in fiery Trump showdown

Two of television’s best-known political commentators turned a friendly interview into a verbal prizefight Thursday as Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera clashed over President Donald Trump’s continued criticism of the 2020 election and the events of January 6.

The fireworks erupted during We’ll Do It LIVE! with Bill O’Reilly after O’Reilly argued that millions of Americans have abandoned legacy media because they no longer trust it.

“Seventy-seven million people who voted for Donald Trump think that the establishment media is dishonest in this country,” O’Reilly said.

He added that his own success comes from offering viewers what he described as an honest alternative.

“They can access somebody who isn’t corrupt. Me.”

Rivera agreed that O’Reilly had earned credibility but quickly steered the conversation toward one of the pair’s longest-running disagreements.

“Did President Trump lose the 2020 election? Yes or no?”

O’Reilly answered carefully.

“There’s no evidence that he won the election.”

Rivera immediately interrupted.

“OK, yes, he lost.”

O’Reilly attempted to explain his position, arguing that legal evidence sufficient to prove criminal election fraud had never materialized.

“Evidence is that you can take it to a federal grand jury and litigate whatever the crime may be. That has not happened. That is a fact.”

Rivera wasn’t buying it.

“That’s baloney.”

Moments later, he raised his voice.

“There’s no evidence that he won… because he lost the election, OK? He lost!”

The debate then shifted to January 6.

Rivera argued Trump bore responsibility for what unfolded at the Capitol.

“He unleashed this anarchy on the Capitol—the heart of democracy.”

O’Reilly sharply disagreed.

“He didn’t do that. That just happened.”

He pointed to Trump’s remarks during the Ellipse speech.

“He clearly said peacefully.”

Rivera continued pressing.

“Come on, Bill. He made liars of the Republican Party.”

O’Reilly rejected that characterization as well.

“He didn’t want those people to go into that building. And he knew it was going to hurt him—and it did hurt him.”

When Rivera insisted Republicans were repeating falsehoods about the election, O’Reilly drew a distinction between intentional deception and political belief.

“It’s not a lie. It’s an opinion.”

He continued:

“There’s a difference between a lie and an opinion. And you’ve got to understand that difference.”

Rivera was among the earliest high-profile Fox News personalities urging Trump to concede, repeatedly warning that continued efforts to overturn the results would damage both Trump and the Republican Party.

O’Reilly, meanwhile, has consistently maintained that while he has not seen evidence proving Trump won, Americans remain justified in questioning election administration and media coverage, particularly regarding mail-in voting, ballot procedures and confidence in election systems.

Despite their heated disagreement, both men have remained friends for decades, making Thursday’s exchange feel more like two old television heavyweights refusing to concede an inch than a permanent falling out.

MY TAKE:

Watching Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera argue is a little like watching two old heavyweight champions who still think they can go twelve rounds.

The difference is that Geraldo walked into this fight looking for one sentence.

“He lost.” That’s it. That was the entire mission.

Never mind inflation. Never mind border security. Never mind the economy. Never mind everything that’s happened over the last six years. The obsession remains 2020.

Here’s where I think Bill got it right. He wasn’t claiming Trump proved the election was stolen. He explicitly said there isn’t evidence proving Trump won.

That’s a very different statement than what Geraldo was trying to force out of him. O’Reilly’s point was about language. People are allowed to hold opinions about election administration, mail-in voting, ballot procedures and the way 2020 was conducted without automatically being branded liars. That’s called living in a free country.

Geraldo, meanwhile, seems to believe there’s only one acceptable script. Read it exactly as written. Repeat every approved talking point. And if you don’t? Well, then you’re apparently making “liars” out of an entire political party.

Here’s something Geraldo actually got right years ago. He once urged Trump to move forward after 2020.

Reasonable people can agree with that while also recognizing another reality: Millions of Americans still have questions about election administration.

They’re not going away because Geraldo raises his voice. And screaming “He lost!” for the thousandth time isn’t going to make half the country suddenly forget everything that happened during one of the most chaotic elections in modern history.
