‘I was born a woman, period’: AOC blames sexism for egg-freezing backlash

by

BS BULLETIN

  • AOC says she has “no regrets” about publicly documenting her decision to freeze her eggs despite political criticism.
  • She argues the scrutiny reflects a double standard her male colleagues don’t face.
  • The intensely personal rollout comes as AOC weighs her political future and refuses to rule out a 2028 presidential run.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is firing back at critics of her very public decision to freeze her eggs, arguing that much of the reaction reflects the same sexism she says has followed her throughout her political career.

“The answer to that simply is no,” AOC said Saturday when asked whether she regretted sharing the process publicly.

“I was born a woman, period,” she continued. “And I have no control over that, and I wouldn’t want to change that.”

Ocasio-Cortez, 36, announced earlier this month that she was undergoing the egg-freezing process and began documenting it for her millions of social-media followers, including showing herself administering fertility injections.

She says her purpose is to help other women understand a process that can be expensive, intimidating and poorly understood.

The congresswoman now says the reaction has merely reinforced her belief that female politicians are subjected to personal scrutiny that men largely escape.

“Ever since I was 28-years-old when I first won my primary, largely unexpectedly to the national media, I have been subject to personal scrutiny and dissection ever since,” she said.

“And it’s no secret to anyone that it’s been done in a way that is just simply not something my male colleagues have been subject to.”

The reaction on the Right hasn’t been entirely uniform, either. Axios reported that some Trump allies were privately irritated by conservative attacks on AOC’s decision, viewing the issue as politically unhelpful — particularly given Trump’s support for IVF.

The Wall Street Journal likewise noted that women from both sides of the political divide have expressed support for AOC discussing fertility preservation openly.

But there is another political dimension hanging over all of this.

AOC acknowledged in an Associated Press interview that she is considering her political future and has not ruled out either a presidential run or a possible challenge to Sen. Chuck Schumer in 2028.

Meanwhile, TMZ reported last week that AOC and longtime fiancé Riley Roberts have split, although the exact timing of the breakup remains unclear.

For her part, Ocasio-Cortez says none of the political speculation changes her decision to talk openly about freezing her eggs.

“Anyways, long story short, I’m a woman,” she said. “And I’m not going to ignore that fact when no one else does.”
