Something unusual is happening inside the U.S. Secret Service. Three officials have been placed on administrative leave while the agency investigates what it describes only as potential “misconduct.”
And one of them is a very familiar face. CBS News and CNN report that Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, is among the three employees sidelined. All three reportedly work in the communications office. They have also lost their security clearances and access to their government devices while the investigation plays out, although officials say that’s standard procedure during an internal probe.
What nobody is explaining is what triggered it. The Secret Service confirmed the investigation Tuesday night but kept the details locked down.
“Three non-law enforcement personnel at the U.S. Secret Service have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into potential misconduct.”
The agency said its Office of Professional Responsibility is handling the matter and added:
“We are unable to comment further at this time.”
That’s not much to go on. But putting three people from the same office on leave at the same time — including the man running communications for the Secret Service — certainly raises questions.
The agency’s statement emphasized the stakes of its mission, saying employees must maintain an “unwavering commitment to duty, honesty, and courage.”
Guglielmi has been the public voice of the Secret Service through an extraordinary period. He was communications director during the 2024 assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, which ultimately led to the resignation of then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and a sweeping examination of the agency’s failures.
More recently, the Secret Service has been dealing with another uncomfortable problem: Leaks.
Last month, an agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s detail was placed on leave amid an investigation into whether sensitive information concerning Vance’s travel was leaked to the press.
That investigation remains ongoing.
There was also an aggressive hunt for the source of reporting about Trump’s secretive departure from Turkey this summer. Trump eventually acknowledged that security officials had quietly moved him onto a different military aircraft because of concerns Iran could be targeting him for assassination.
CNN reports that Secret Service personnel were questioned during a leak investigation after reporting emerged about the Turkey operation. FBI Director Kash Patel helped launch the initial inquiry from inside the White House. None of the reporting so far establishes that the three communications employees sidelined this week are accused of leaking anything. The Secret Service isn’t even publicly identifying the alleged misconduct.
But with three people from the communications operation suddenly out at once, the unanswered question is difficult to miss: What happened?
CBS News reports Guglielmi has been contacted for comment. So far, no answer.
