The Iranian state-media video targeting Barron Trump was disturbing enough when it surfaced Monday.
Now the United States Secret Service has officially responded.
“The U.S. Secret Service is aware of the video and investigates anything that can be perceived as a threat toward our protectees,” agency spokesman Nate Herring told Fox News Digital Tuesday.
“Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence,” Herring added.
That terse statement comes after Iranian state television broadcast an approximately three-minute segment focused on President Donald Trump’s 20-year-old son, complete with imagery purporting to track his whereabouts, examine his security arrangements and identify ways to reach him.
The video reportedly carried the chilling title: “Where and how should we kill Barron Trump?”
It depicted locations associated with Barron, including his university, along with purported escort vehicles and Secret Service positions, while claiming that his movements were “fully monitored.” Toward the end, the broadcast referred to a supposed $10 million reward connected to targeting him.
Daily BS reported on the video Monday, while stressing an important distinction that remains true today: Iranian television made the claims, but there is no independent evidence establishing that its supposed surveillance operation is genuine or that an actual $10 million bounty has been funded.
Iran International, which reviewed the broadcast, said it could not independently verify the operational claims and noted that the segment relied heavily on dramatized graphics.
But the Secret Service isn’t in the business of assuming threats against a president’s family are television theatrics.
And Iran has given American security officials plenty of reason to pay attention.
Deputy Secret Service Director Matt Quinn acknowledged just last month that Tehran has openly threatened President Trump.
“I don’t think it’s any secret, it’s been in the media, that Iran has publicly said they want to kill President Trump,” Quinn said.
Reuters reported Tuesday that American officials have received multiple warnings from Israel over the past year about Iranian intentions to assassinate Trump. Trump himself has described himself as “number one on the kill list for Iran.”
But targeting Barron represents something particularly ugly.
He isn’t the commander in chief.
He didn’t order a military operation.
He doesn’t formulate American policy toward Iran.
He’s the president’s 20-year-old son.
And according to Iran International, shifting threatening rhetoric toward Trump’s immediate family represents a potentially significant escalation.
The Iranian broadcast wasn’t merely somebody shouting an ugly slogan on television. It was packaged to look like an intelligence operation, with graphics portraying surveillance, social connections and efforts to penetrate Secret Service protection.
Whether Tehran actually possesses any of the capabilities suggested in that propaganda is another matter entirely.
The Secret Service clearly isn’t laughing.
