LOS ANGELES — City officials declared victory Thursday after completing what they called one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent Los Angeles history: painting seven yellow stripes across a cracked street.

Councilwoman Nithya Raman celebrated the long-awaited crosswalk after the Los Feliz Neighborhood Council first raised the issue in late 2025.

“This proves Los Angeles can still do big things,” said Deputy Assistant Crosswalk Commissioner Pilar DeLanes. “Seven stripes. One intersection. Nine months. People said it couldn’t be done.”

Residents immediately questioned why crews simply painted over the cracks.

Officials said repairing the street would have delayed the project.

“We studied filling the cracks, but that would have required opening a second work order,” explained DeLanes. “Nobody wants that.”

The city also confirmed rumors that an eighth stripe had originally been planned.

“That stripe remains under environmental review,” said Department of Transportation spokesman Lane Divider. “Preliminary studies indicate its shadow could temporarily alter the lived experience of approximately six ants.”

The environmental impact report is expected in 2031.

City officials nevertheless stressed that the project came in under its preliminary $14 million budget, largely because workers were able to reuse three gallons of yellow paint left over from a 2019 curb initiative.

Mayor Karen Bass praised the achievement and announced that Los Angeles would now begin studying whether another crosswalk might be appropriate somewhere else in the city.

“We’ve shown what government can accomplish,” Bass said. “Now we scale.”

Construction could begin by 2034.
