192 House Democrats vote against condemning socialism as eight break ranks

The House passed a Republican resolution condemning “socialism in all its forms” by a 220-192 vote.
Every opposing vote came from Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the rest of the party’s senior House leadership.
Eight Democrats backed the measure, while two voted present. The resolution also endorsed the Republican-backed SAVE Act and its citizenship requirements for federal voter registration.

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to condemn socialism, with 192 Democrats—including the party’s top leaders—opposing the resolution.

The nonbinding measure passed 220-192 after every Republican and eight Democrats voted in favor.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar were among the Democrats who voted no.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo., condemned “socialism in all its forms,” including the Democratic Socialists of America, and reaffirmed support for the Constitution and free-market principles.

It also endorsed election-integrity measures and called for passage of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, better known as the SAVE Act. That Republican-backed legislation would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

The eight Democrats who joined Republicans were Reps. Kathy Castor of Florida, Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar of Texas, Darren Soto of Florida, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Don Davis of North Carolina and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico.

Democratic Reps. Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania voted present.

The final vote almost never happened.

Earlier Tuesday, five conservative Republicans threatened to defeat the procedural rule needed to bring the resolution and several other measures to the floor.

Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez then crossed party lines and supplied the two votes Republicans needed to advance the rule, which passed 209-208.

Their decision reportedly blindsided Jeffries, who told reporters that neither lawmaker had notified him beforehand.

Golden is not seeking reelection, while Gluesenkamp Perez is considered one of the most vulnerable House Democrats heading into the midterms.

Crank described the choice presented by his resolution as straightforward.

“It condemns socialism in all its forms, including the DSA, recommits ourselves to the Constitution of the United States,” Crank told Fox News Digital. “A third point is that we don’t want noncitizens voting in elections.”

Democrats argued that Republicans designed the resolution as a symbolic political trap and said its inclusion of the SAVE Act made it more than a simple vote on socialism.

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., dismissed the measure as a distraction from gas prices, grocery bills and other economic concerns.

Republicans said the vote demonstrated how closely Democratic leaders are now tied to the party’s socialist wing.

“Today’s vote ripped off the mask,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella told Fox News Digital. “House Democrats are so beholden to their socialist leaders they will rubber-stamp their far-left radical policies the second they get the chance.”

The vote came as Democratic Socialist candidates have defeated several establishment-backed Democrats in congressional primaries, intensifying the party’s internal fight over the DSA’s growing influence.

MY QUICK TAKE

Yes, Republicans loaded the resolution with the SAVE Act, giving Democrats a procedural fig leaf for voting no.

But Washington is a town where politicians routinely name bills the exact opposite of what they do. Nobody is going to remember the parliamentary explanation.

They will remember the number: 192 Democrats voted against a resolution condemning socialism.

If your party is already trying to convince voters that socialists are not taking over, voting “no” on “socialism is bad” is an awfully creative way to make the case.

Some campaign ads practically write themselves. This one even came with a roll-call vote.
