Trump blasts Hochul over hijab appearance, calls controversy ‘crazy’

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • President Donald Trump criticized New York Gov. Kathy Hochul after she wore a headscarf while visiting an Islamic center in New York City.
  • Trump accused Hochul of trying to court Arab voters and connected the appearance to his opposition to New York City’s congestion-pricing program.
  • Hochul attended Friday prayers, addressed the congregation and toured the center’s school facilities.

President Donald Trump criticized New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday over her decision to wear a headscarf during a recent appearance at an Islamic center in New York City.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a photograph of Hochul wearing the covering and accused the Democratic governor of attempting to appeal to Arab voters.

“Hochul, considered the Worst Governor in the Country,” was “working hard to get the Arab Vote,” Trump wrote.

Trump also connected Hochul’s appearance to New York City’s congestion-pricing program, which charges drivers entering parts of Manhattan.

The president claimed the program was hurting Hochul politically, “especially [with] the people for whom she wears the hijab.”

“The whole thing is CRAZY!” Trump concluded.

Hochul wore the black headscarf while attending Friday prayers at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. During the visit, she addressed congregants and toured the center’s affiliated school and classrooms.

The Islamic Cultural Center School later described Hochul’s appearance as a meaningful acknowledgment of its role in the community and thanked her for supporting efforts to make New Yorkers feel safe and respected.

Wearing a head covering as a sign of respect is a common practice among women visiting some Muslim religious institutions.  Hochul previously wore a headscarf at the July 2025 funeral of NYPD Detective Didarul Islam, a Muslim officer killed in a Manhattan shooting. At the time, she said she wore it to respect the officer’s faith and grieving family.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Hochul’s performance as governor and has endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate challenging her in New York’s gubernatorial race.

The president has also opposed congestion pricing, describing the program in an August Truth Social post as a “dangerous political ‘experiment’” that could bring financial and social damage to New York.
