Former MSNBC host Joy Reid has unveiled a new racism flowchart designed to help Americans determine when calling a Black man a “monkey” is racist — and when additional context may be required.
The new system follows Reid’s defense of Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal, who ignited a firestorm after calling House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries a “bought and paid by AIPAC monkey.”
The Congressional Black Caucus was unequivocal. “There isn’t a non-racist way” to call a Black man a monkey, the group said.
Jebreal also apologized “unconditionally.”
Reid, however, identified a previously overlooked variable.
Because Jebreal wasn’t born and raised in the United States, Reid suggested there could have been a “cultural disconnection,” contrasting the episode with conservatives, whom she said tend to be “absolutely malicious.”
That distinction reportedly prompted development of the new Reid Racism Determination System, which uses a simple flowchart:
Did a conservative say it?
YES → RACIST. CASE CLOSED.
NO → Proceed to contextual review.
Reviewers are then instructed to consider the speaker’s birthplace, political affiliation, position on Israel, history of criticizing Trump and whether Joy believes the person “was trying to make a point.”
Foreign-born progressives automatically qualify for the system’s Cultural Misunderstanding Waiver.
Republicans are ineligible.
The system was briefly thrown into confusion after researchers discovered that Jebreal herself condemned Ron DeSantis in 2018 for saying Florida voters shouldn’t “monkey this up,” calling it “disgusting, blatant racist rhetoric.”
Reid’s team immediately added another box: Was that different?
YES → Obviously. Continue.
The Congressional Black Caucus reportedly submitted Jebreal’s remarks for a second review Monday.
The computer again returned: RACIST.
