When your son is one of the richest people on Earth, you’d think visiting him would at least get you the guest bedroom.
Maye Musk gets the garage.
And apparently that’s exactly where she wants to be.
The 78-year-old model, author and mother of Elon Musk told the New York Post that she has no problem roughing it when she visits her son at SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas.
“If I have a couch or a mattress on the floor, then I’m good,” Musk said. “Sleeping on the floor — there’s a roof over your head. That’s a luxury.”
Maye has previously described just how minimalist the accommodations can be.
“There is no food in the fridge,” she wrote on X earlier this year. “The garage where I slept is on the right.”
Then there was the bathroom.
“The shower only has one towel so I left it for Elon.”
This is the mother of a man whose fortune is measured in hundreds of billions of dollars.
One towel.
But there’s more to the story.
During a recent interview, Maye revealed that she wasn’t banished to the garage because Elon couldn’t spring for a Marriott.
She had another option.
“There was a suite for me at the hotel 45 minutes away,” she explained.
Maye didn’t want it.
“When I’m going to visit Elon, I don’t want to be in a suite,” she said. “I want to be there so that when he has breakfast, I can join him.”
So she sleeps in the garage.
And this apparently isn’t some new billionaire-family eccentricity.
Maye grew up taking weeks-long family trips through the Kalahari Desert, sometimes going three weeks without a shower because there was no water.
She also said she slept in her own mother’s garage during visits to Canada when there wasn’t a guest room.
Her rule appears to be fairly simple: she’d rather rough it near her family than sleep comfortably somewhere else.
It fits rather neatly with her son’s famously unconventional approach to luxury.
Elon has spent years describing himself as largely uninterested in elaborate homes, previously living in a modest house near Starbase and sometimes sleeping at his companies during intense work periods.
This week, he revealed that he’s currently living in an Airstream trailer near an xAI data-center construction project in Memphis.
He jokingly calls it his “palace.”
Maye, meanwhile, is still modeling, traveling, speaking and promoting her new memoir, “Timeless: The Art of Reinvention and Resilience at Any Age.”
She says her seventies have been the best years of her life and has no plans to retire.
She just might want to put a spare towel in her suitcase.
