The battle over President Trump’s name at the Kennedy Center moved to Congress Wednesday, where lawmakers immediately demonstrated why nobody asks Congress to renovate anything.
A federal judge has ruled that the Kennedy Center cannot add Trump’s name to the building without congressional approval. The Kennedy Center board wants Trump recognized for his role in raising money and overseeing plans to rescue and renovate the aging Washington landmark. Trump says $17 million he raised has already been deposited into the Kennedy Center’s account.
Congressional approval would appear to offer a straightforward way through the dispute.
It did not.
Within hours, lawmakers announced creation of the bipartisan Select Committee on Kennedy Center Naming, Renaming, Recognition, Memorialization and Other Large Letters Attached to Buildings. The committee’s first meeting was postponed after members could not agree on what to call it.
Republicans proposed the Trump-Kennedy Center Naming Committee. Democrats objected.
Democrats proposed the Kennedy Center Preservation Committee. Republicans objected.
One senator suggested simply calling it “the committee.” That proposal has been referred to a subcommittee.
President Trump was reportedly unimpressed. “The building needs to be fixed,” fictional White House official Bill D. Center said. “The president raised the money. He knows construction. Congress has now spent six hours deciding whether a plaque is technically a plaque.”
Lawmakers insist they’re making progress.
A bipartisan working group has already reached tentative agreement that the building should continue to contain doors.
Negotiations concerning windows remain ongoing.
The naming dispute became more urgent after the Kennedy Center board voted to close most of the performing arts complex while its future is sorted out. Trump has said the building requires major safety repairs and that reconstruction cannot proceed until the legal dispute over the board-approved recognition of his role is resolved.
Congressional leaders promised to move quickly.
Under the current timetable, lawmakers expect to resolve the naming question shortly after completion of the Kennedy Center renovation.
Construction has not begun.
