JD Vance gives Democrats four words they couldn’t wait to hear

Vice President JD Vance was trying to make the case for Republicans in November.

Instead, Democrats heard four words they couldn’t wait to put in an ad. “Give us another chance.”

Vance delivered the line during a lengthy appearance on the All-In podcast after host Chamath Palihapitiya asked him what message Republicans should take to voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Vance began by pointing to what he described as the administration’s accomplishments over the past 18 months. He cited tax cuts on overtime, Social Security and tips, tighter border enforcement and changes to the H-1B visa program. Then came the sentence that immediately escaped into the political wild.

“There’s a lot of good that’s been done, but there’s a lot of work left to do,” Vance said. “Don’t give power to the people who cause the problems that we’re fixing. Give us another chance, or give us another couple of years, to continue to work on the amazing things that we’ve been doing for the past two years.”

Democrats promptly isolated the “give us another chance” portion and began circulating it online.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries paraphrased Vance’s message as Republicans admitting they had failed and responded, “Get Lost.” Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii called the phrase a remarkable midterm pitch and urged Democratic operatives to make sure voters saw the clip.

Vance’s complete answer, however, was considerably broader than the viral excerpt.

His second argument was that voters who disagree with some Republican policies should still choose the GOP because of what he characterized as Democratic radicalism.

“Even if you don’t agree with us on every issue, the other party is consumed by craziness,” Vance said.

He went on to attack Democratic positions on immigration and other issues and argued that Republicans were motivated by “common sense and American interest.”

That didn’t prevent opponents from zeroing in on the phrase Vance had handed them. And with the November midterms approaching, three little words from a 30-minute podcast interview suddenly became the political clip of the day.
