Maye Musk jumps into Sydney Sweeney ad war: ‘look sexy and have fun’

Sydney Sweeney has another prominent woman in her corner after her provocative sports ad triggered a very public backlash.

Maye Musk, the 78-year-old model and mother of Elon Musk, defended Sweeney during an appearance on OutKick’s “Tomi Lahren Is Fearless,” arguing that the 29-year-old actress doesn’t need to apologize for using sex appeal in her work.

“She’s a model,” Musk said of Sweeney. “Well, she’s an actress, but she’s a model, and modeling, you can look sexy and acting, you can look sexy and have fun.”

“I think she’s fabulous,” Musk added, describing Sweeney as beautiful and saying she appears to have a good sense of humor.

Musk knows something about high-profile modeling herself. She appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in 2022 at age 74.

The controversy erupted over Sweeney’s campaign for Novig, a sports trading platform. The ad depicts Sweeney mostly nude, with strategically positioned sports equipment providing coverage as she talks about the platform.

Several prominent female athletes criticized the campaign. Australian Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus said she was “infuriated” by the ad and argued that female athletes have fought to be recognized for their accomplishments rather than their bodies.

British sprinter Amy Hunt and former American gymnast Gracie Kramer also publicly criticized the campaign.

Sweeney appeared to answer the criticism by posting images of prominent female athletes who had previously posed nude for ESPN magazine, including Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe and Caroline Wozniacki.

Sweeney has said the campaign was intended to be playful and focused on sports.

“The concept is simple: cut through the noise and put the focus entirely on sports,” she said in a statement reported by Fox News.

Musk’s interview then veered from Sweeney into a considerably different subject: becoming an American. Musk, who was born in Canada and raised in South Africa, recalled the lengthy process she went through before becoming a U.S. citizen.

“When I moved to America, it took me 12 years to become a citizen,” Musk said.

She said the moment remained emotional: “When I was there with the ceremony, I was just crying. I was so happy to be a citizen.”

Musk contrasted her experience with government benefits she said are being provided to people in the country illegally and questioned why taxpayers should be footing those bills. She also discussed government fraud and praised independent journalist Nick Shirley’s investigations into allegedly fraudulent operations receiving taxpayer money.

And then came perhaps the least controversial Maye Musk opinion of the entire interview. The grandmother of 18 said she doesn’t give her grandchildren Christmas presents.

They get hugs instead.

“You never have enough hugs,” Musk said. “Hugs count.”

MY QUICK TAKE

Sydney Sweeney has now survived the Internet outrage cycle and picked up a 78-year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model as backup.

Maye Musk’s message is basically: She’s beautiful, she’s having fun, and everybody needs to calm down. And after raising Elon Musk, I’m guessing an angry comment section isn’t particularly intimidating.
