BS BULLETIN:
- Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier says a history teacher singled out an eighth grader as the classroom’s “conservative perspective” despite his parents telling her to keep him out of political discussions.
- Uthmeier alleges teacher Liz Ballard later labeled the student a “misogynist,” spread that characterization around the school and questioned his father’s influence.
- Ballard disputes the allegations, while Sarasota County Schools says it is examining the facts and records before taking action.
A Florida attorney general is calling for a history teacher to be fired over allegations that she turned an eighth-grade student’s conservative politics into a classroom target.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sent a letter to Sarasota County Schools accusing Pine View School history teacher Liz Ballard of harassing and disparaging the student because of his political views.
According to Uthmeier, Ballard routinely discussed politics in class and repeatedly treated the boy as the classroom’s “conservative perspective.”
The student’s parents had expressly told Ballard they did not want their son participating in those political discussions, according to the attorney general. Uthmeier alleges those instructions were ignored.
“Ms. Ballard singled out this student and, in defiance of his parents’ express instructions, pressured him to defend political positions on demand in front of his classmates,” Uthmeier wrote.
I sent a letter to Sarasota Schools after a Pine View teacher allegedly labeled an 8th grader a “misogynist” based on his political affiliation, ignored his parents’ wishes, and disparaged the child’s father.

Then things allegedly escalated.
Uthmeier says Ballard eventually called the eighth grader a “misogynist,” repeated that characterization around the school and “openly questioned the suitability and influence” of his father.
The attorney general described the alleged conduct as the “reputational destruction of a child.” His letter also says multiple parents have previously initiated human-resources investigations involving Ballard.
Uthmeier said that if the allegations are corroborated, Ballard’s conduct would violate Florida law, Sarasota County School Board policy and professional standards for educators. He wants her dismissed and her Florida educator certificate revoked if the allegations prove true.
“If true, she should be fired and never teach in Florida again,” Uthmeier said. He has given the school district until Oct. 1 to tell his office what action it has taken or plans to take.
Ballard, however, is pushing back. “What I read in that letter is not accurate at all compared to the actual investigation,” she told WFLA.
Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor also stopped short of accepting Uthmeier’s allegations as established fact. The district said it would “examine the relevant facts and records, ensure a fair process for all involved, and take appropriate action based on the findings and requirements.”
Connor added that no student should face “harassment, humiliation, or retaliation because of their beliefs or their family’s views.”
MY QUICK TAKE
An eighth grader shouldn’t be appointed spokesman for American conservatism because he happens to be the conservative kid in history class.
There are cable-news panels full of adults who volunteered for that job.
Whatever the investigation ultimately finds about the more serious allegations, the idea that a 13- or 14-year-old should have to defend an entire political worldview on demand in front of his classmates is a pretty strange definition of history class.
