BS BULLETIN:
- Axios reported that U.S. officials said President Trump was willing to offer Iran sanctions relief and access to frozen funds in exchange for concrete nuclear concessions.
- Trump says that is flat-out false: “I offered them NOTHING!”
- Axios updated its story with Trump’s denial but has not withdrawn the underlying report.
President Donald Trump apparently read Axios Monday night.
He was not impressed.
Axios reported that Trump was willing to offer Iran economic sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian funds in exchange for concrete steps on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The report cited unnamed U.S. officials familiar with the indirect negotiations.
Trump’s response left very little room for interpretation.
“Axios just released a story that ‘Trump’ offered Sanctions Relief and Frozen Funds to Iran. This is untrue. I offered them NOTHING! Axios’ story, like most others, is a HOAX, used only for purposes of satisfying their Trump Derangement Syndrome. They should withdraw this fake story, IMMEDIATELY!”
That’s not exactly a dispute over semantics.
Axios says U.S. officials told the outlet the president was prepared to put significant economic relief on the table if Iran made concrete nuclear concessions.
Trump says he offered them nothing.
Axios updated its report to include Trump’s denial, but the outlet did not retract its reporting.
The disagreement lands in the middle of a renewed diplomatic push to find some kind of breakthrough with Tehran.
Qatari and Pakistani mediators have been working between the two sides, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meeting mediators in New York. Trump had already rejected Iran’s latest proposal, while indicating that further talks were expected.
According to Axios, one U.S. official described the indirect discussions as “positive and constructive” and said Iran had shown flexibility on nuclear issues, while stressing that no agreement could happen without addressing Tehran’s nuclear program.
So now there are two very different accounts of what Washington is prepared to give Iran.
One comes from unnamed U.S. officials talking to Axios. The other comes directly from the president of the United States.
And Trump isn’t merely saying Axios got a detail wrong. He’s telling them to pull the story.
MY QUICK TAKE
There is an enormous difference between Trump privately authorizing negotiators to explore what Iran might get in a final deal and Trump actually offering Iran sanctions relief and frozen money. That distinction matters — especially when the president himself is shouting that the latter never happened.
Maybe Axios has sources with the receipts. Maybe somebody inside the government is describing negotiating possibilities as an actual Trump offer.
But when the president says “I offered them NOTHING!” and tells the publication to retract the story immediately, Axios now owns the claim.
That’s a pretty expensive word: nothing.
