California Gov. Gavin Newsom has created a new state task force charged with protecting the term “Artificial Intelligence” from any future naming suggestions by President Donald Trump.
The move comes after Trump publicly suggested that artificial intelligence might be better described as “super intelligence,” or “SI,” prompting Newsom to sign an executive order directing California agencies to continue calling AI “AI.”
State officials said Friday that the executive order was only the beginning.
The newly formed California Artificial Intelligence Terminology Stability Task Force will monitor speeches, interviews, social media posts and “other potentially destabilizing naming activity” originating from the Trump administration.
“We cannot have 39 million Californians waking up every morning wondering what artificial intelligence is called today,” one administration official said.
The task force will reportedly include representatives from the governor’s office, the Department of Technology, the Department of General Services and at least one person whose sole responsibility is refreshing Truth Social.
Officials stressed that the group will not regulate artificial intelligence itself.
Its mission is strictly to make sure everybody keeps calling it artificial intelligence.
As part of the effort, California is also launching a hotline for state employees who become confused about whether they are still permitted to use the abbreviation “AI.”
Workers who dial 1-800-STILL-AI will hear a recorded message assuring them: “Yes. It is still called AI. Please return to work.”
Callers who press 2 will receive confirmation that “machine learning” is also still called machine learning.
Pressing 3 will connect employees with a specially trained terminology counselor who can walk them through any emotional distress caused by hearing the phrase “super intelligence.”
The administration is also preparing laminated wallet cards for state employees reading:

Newsom defended the initiative Friday, saying California has a responsibility to provide stability at a time of growing uncertainty.
“People deserve to know that when they go to bed calling it AI, they can wake up in California and still call it AI,” he said.
The governor would not say how much the task force will cost.
Officials said funding details are currently being reviewed by a second task force.
